360 bhp, 4,942 cc DOHC horizontally opposed 12-cylinder engine with four Weber triple-barrel carburetors, five-speed manual transaxle, front and rear unequal-length A-arm suspension with coil springs and anti-roll bars, and four-wheel disc brakes. Wheelbase: 98.4 in.
Leaving the factory in traditional Rosso Corsa with black Boxer trim over Nero, just as it is presented today, the Ferrari 512 BB presented here was purchased new by Joseph Blitz and shipped to the East Coast of the United States by Alitalia Air Freight on October 6, 1980. Chassis number 33715 was then federalized by Classic Coach of Elizabeth, New Jersey, shortly thereafter, and it is believed that it remained in Blitz’s ownership for the next six years. On June 19, 1987, the car was sold through Classic Coach to Massimo Ferragamo, chairman of Ferragamo USA and youngest son of Salvatore Ferragamo. During this time, the car was kept at his summer home in Connecticut.
Ferragamo kept the car for the following nine years and subsequently sold it to his friend Ottavio Serena on July 1, 1996. The car would remain with Serena in Connecticut until it was purchased by its current owner in 2007. During the time it was owned by Ferragamo and Serena, it was always maintained and serviced by Ferrari specialist Bill Pollard and received a major service by him in 2007 before being delivered to its current owner.
Under the ownership of its current custodian, chassis number 33715 has been both regularly driven and shown, earning 94 points at the Ferrari Club of America National Meet in Leesburg, Virginia, in 2014 and a Silver award at the FCA Annual Meet in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, in 2009. A highly original example, this 512 BB still boasts its original Nero interior and has only received one repaint in its original shade of Rosso Corsa, thought to have been performed during Ferragamo’s ownership.
Furthermore, the car’s current mileage, showing just under 45,000 original kilometers, is indeed original and can be confirmed by documents accompanying the car from throughout its life. These include the original container ticket from Alitalia, a letter from the EPA dated 1981, bills of sale from Classic Coach to Ferragamo and Ferragamo to Serena, and receipts from prior services, including its most recent major service. A proper 512 BB owner’s manual and tool kit are also included.
Since Ferrari’s Berlinetta Boxer models have increased in popularity in recent years, it has become increasingly difficult to find unmolested examples presented in largely original condition. Chassis number 33715 is truly an exceptional example in every sense. Incredibly well preserved, regularly maintained throughout its life, and offered with a wonderful file of documentation, this 512 BB warrants serious consideration and would please the most discerning of collectors with an eye for originality.
