One of the great names in post-war French motor sport, Alpine was the brainchild of Jean Redele, son of a Dieppe garagiste. Redele began in the early 1950s by developing a competition version of the popular little Renault 4CV, which won its class in the Mille Miglia three years running. For 1963, Alpine launched the Renault-powered A110 Berlinette, which became the mainspring of production and was developed into a potent - and often unbeatable - rally car using a variety of Renault power units.
Produced from 1962 through to 1977, this charismatic sports two-seater rivalled the Porsche 911 for performance while being even more exclusive: the hand-built Alpines left the factory at the rate of only 10 per week in the late 1960s/early 1970s. Its rearward weight bias gave the A110 outstanding cornering characteristics for rallying. In 1970, Alpine driver Jean-Claude Andruet became European Rally Champion, and this and other successes led to Alpine's appointment as Renault's official competition wing. More successes followed in 1971, '72, and '73.
This superb, French built and striking example is presented in traditional Elf works colours and is to Group 4 specification with its 1600 Sal Saco engine, producing 142 bhp. Its interior has quilted diamond stitched period Group 4 bucket seats with Schroth four-point harnesses and is equipped with rally navigation equipment fitted with Pia lights, plumbed fire extinguisher works style front fuel tank, pro wiring loom with high capacity Gel Cell battery together with interior battery cut-off switch and a full bolt in roll cage.
The present owner had the car repainted, fitted new works style lower front panel with correct cooling duct, fitted works type drive lamp brackets, front protective shield and fabricated a works specification front sump guard with full underbody protection. The dashboard has had period Pia lights fitted and the owner also had a new cross/diamond stitched tunnel cover and rear shelf cover made and fitted. Its 1600 engine is mated to a new Monte Carlo specification close ratio gearbox with LSD and a works style sump guard was fitted to the rear, new suspension bushes and Group 4 springs and brakes.
The wheels are ex-works 6X13 Gotti with new Pirelli tarmac tyres and the exhaust manifold has been ceramic coated. This fabulous sports car comes with a superb and concise history including photographs of rebuild. This Alpine A110 wants for nothing and is simply fantastic, on the button and ready for use in competition or as a great road car! A very capable car in the right hands.
