With its introduction in mid-1955 after the end of World War II, the open, two-seat Giulietta Spider was born into a prosperous era, falling perfectly within the postwar economic boom. While the Sprint Coupe designed by Franco Scaglione at Bertone came first, the convertible bodywork designed by Pininfarina was the style of choice for U.S. buyers. In fact, the sporty racing car helped establish Alfa Romeo as a reputable, and even desirable, marque in the U.S. Its early success in the States is credited in large part to renowned importer Max Hoffman, who brought many foreign autos to U.S. soil that he thought would be well-received by the buying public.
It was Hoffman who saw a definite market for a lightweight and small-volume racing Alfa, and it was upon his request that the open-top Spider was born. The car was just as successful as Hoffman had predicted, with style, comfort and performance all present to satisfy even the most critical of enthusiasts. Despite its popularity, the Giulietta’s production lasted less than a decade as the model transformed into the Giulia, and later the Duetto. Production estimates for the Giulietta Spider come in at around 14,300, marking it as a fairly rare machine in relation to its brethren Sprint, Berlina and other body styles that were produced at more than twice the rate of the open-top Spider.
Today, that number is certainly much smaller, as these vehicles were marketed to the thrill-seeking racers who were likely to run them hard, and often right to their bitter ends. This frame-off restored 1958 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider is a stunning example of the enduring Pininfarina design. The highly detailed California car's yellow paint with contrasting black soft top and black interior makes for an eye-catching combination that’s sure to draw attention.
