    Volvo 144 GL Rally, 1972

Chassis No.: 346074 Registration: HAR 957L Sold for an undisclosed fee • Purchased in 2009 and converted into a historic rally car with extensive works • First place in the month-long 2010 Carrera Copacabana Rally The Volvo 144, introduced in August 1966 for the 1967 model year, was a revolutionary four-door, four-cylinder saloon that defined Volvo's ‘boxy’ design language for decades. Renowned for its safety, it featured disc brakes on all four wheels, energy-absorbing crumple zones, and a robust, reliable, and spacious design. Produced until 1974, it featured 1.8 or 2.0 litre engines and laid the groundwork for the later 200-series. Famed for their ability to withstand Scandinavian winters and clock up huge mileages, 140-series cars were also surprisingly comfortable, benefitting from reclining front seats and fully carpeted interiors as standard. Volvo’s saloons were capable rally cars and the 144 (the 140 series’ four-door saloon) was no exception. Notable endeavours included the 1968 London-Sydney Rally and José Araujo and John Batley’s entry in the 1970 London-Mexico World Cup Rally. ‘HAR 957L’ had a quiet life at first, being sold through the Park Road Garage in Bedford in 1973 to an Italian ice-cream seller, to be used for his summer holidays in Italy. When he passed way in c.1999, the Volvo was offered back to the Park Road Garage having covered 60,000 miles. In 2009, the then owner considered it perfect for his own rallying ambitions, the car was stripped down and thoroughly lightened, with all the glass and interior removed. Upgrades included a GT dash, a full roll cage, new coil springs and Bilstein shock absorbers, uprated brakes and larger-diameter 1980s Volvo wheels. The car was entered in the month-long 2010 Carrera Copacabana rally and proceeded to be the winner! It was one of only seven finishers in the challenging drive from Argentina to Brazil, traversing Chile, Peru and Bolivia. Following its victory, the Volvo has seen little action and remains in excellent order and is offered with a history file which contains the ownership history, MoTs back to 2000, and much documentation from the Copacabana rally. This vehicle has been recently fully serviced and MoT’d, it is described as in fantastic working order and ready to enter any of the many historic rallies around the world. Volvo 144 'The Camel', 1970

Chassis No.: 164698 Engine No.: 1892572 Registration: EPV 86H The Volvo 140 Series was manufactured from 1966 to 1974 in two and four-door models. The 144 series, which followed the Amazon, was the first Volvo to use a tri-digit nomenclature, indicating series, number of cylinders and number of doors. Thus, a 144 was a first series, four cylinder, four-door saloon and was the first Volvo to feature a boxier styling. The car's basic shape would survive into the 1990s as the 200 series. Mechanically, the car used many of the same drivetrain components as the Amazon, but also showcased many improvements, including disc brakes on all four wheels. This 1970 registered Volvo 144 was turned into a rally car in 2010 by Amazon Cars of Brundish, Suffolk by proprietor Rob Henchoz for his own use in the 2012 London to Cape Town World Cup Rally in which it finished a very creditable 6th overall. The car was then reconditioned by Amazon and resold, the new owner entered her in the 2013 Peking to Paris Motor Challenge rally where it finished 11th overall. The Volvo was again reconditioned by Amazon and sold to a competitor in the 2016 Peking to Paris Motor Challenge where it was used as a replacement car for the European leg of the route, again finishing without any trouble. Reconditioned for a third time by Amazon and stored until a service was carried out recently, this competitive Volvo is ready to once again compete around the globe. To be expected of such a reliable car, this Volvo has a highly strengthened shell with uprated suspension and brakes, underbody protection, ‘Safari’ bull bar and a roll cage. All the fuel and brake lines run within the body of the car and she is also fitted with twin aluminium foam-filled fuel tanks located above the rear axle for safety and stability reasons. The two litre B20 engine was rebuilt by Amazon and uprated some 5,000 miles ago with many new parts including lightened flywheel, ceramic-coated free flow exhaust system, a four-speed gearbox and a limited slip differential. Many original and well thought out modifications have been carried out to make ‘on rally’ maintenance easier, for example, a built-in air compressor has been fitted, a document safe and twin fuel pumps. The net result in of all this work is a Volvo 144 that is eligible to compete in a number of significant rallies around the world, the vendor has stated he would be happy to advise any new owner in how best to achieve this. https://www.historics.co.uk/auction/lot/?lot=6902&au=60

    Volvo 144 'The Camel', 1970

Chassis No.: 164698 Engine No.: 1892572 Registration: EPV 86H The 72 year old London-based owner of this Peking to Paris Volvo, was taken ill at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in early March. As a long-term patient of University College of London Hospital’s internationally respected Haematology team, he walked into the hospital on a Sunday afternoon feeling unwell. Within 24 hours his condition had deteriorated so rapidly that he was moved into the Intensive Care Unit and had to be resuscitated while his partner and daughter looked on. He was subsequently hospitalised for a fortnight before being discharged to recuperate at home in isolation, and thankfully has now made a full recovery. ‘If it wasn’t for the skill and care of the UCLH Haematology team and their ICU colleagues, I simply would not be here today', he said. ‘UCLH is truly a world-class medical institution and I feel very fortunate to have been a patient there. Whoever buys the Volvo will have the satisfaction of knowing that the whole of the price they pay will go towards UCLH's cutting-edge haematology research. Plus they’ll get a very well-prepared rally car with a great history which is ready for further adventures anywhere in the world.'
