    Porsche 914-6, 1972

Chassis No.: 4722920060 • Engine: Other • Transmission: Manual • Exterior: Racing Yellow • Interior: Black • Ground-up restoration by Classic Showcase • 2.4L Porsche 911 flat 6-cylinder engine • Two PMO 3-barrel carburetors • MSD ignition system • Professionally dyno-tuned • Built 901 side-shift transaxle • RennShift shifter • Metal GT fender flares • Bilstein suspension • 911SC brakes • Porsche Turbo Fuchs wheels • Bridgestone Potenza tires, 225/50R15 • Porsche Racing Yellow paint • Dynamat sound deadening material • New wiring, rubber and hardware • New alternator Debuted at the 1969 Frankfurt Auto Show as a 1970 model, the new Porsche 914 succeeded the outgoing 912 and was sold as the “VW-Porsche 914” by VW-Porsche GmbH in Europe and as the “Porsche 914” by Volkswagen of America. Rooted in sketches by Hans Gugelot and developed under Ferdinand A. “Butzi” Porsche, the 914 featured taut Karmann-built bodywork, a removable Targa roof, and initially, a mid-mounted, air-cooled 1.7L VW 4-cylinder engine, upsized by 1973 to 2.0L. In addition to its fuel-injected engine and 5-speed gearbox, the 914 boasted near-50/50 weight distribution and delivered outstanding handling. The 914-6 was introduced in 1970, featuring a 125 HP Porsche flat-6 powerplant shared with the 911T, and with suspension upgrades also derived from the 911. Primarily intended to homologate the 914 with the FIA under Group 4––special grand touring cars––a 914-6 co-driven by Claude Ballot-Lena and Guy Chasseuil won the GTS class and finished 6th overall at the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans. In preparation for the 1970 Targa Florio, Brian Redman used a 914-6 to scout the vast and challenging Sicilian roads. While the 914-6 was discontinued after 1972, the 4-cylinder 914 was produced through 1975, and it was Porsche’s most successful model during its run. Benefiting from a ground-up restoration by Classic Showcase in Oceanside, California, this 1972 Porsche 914-6 is powered by a 2.4L Porsche 911 flat 6-cylinder engine, equipped with two PMO 3-barrel carburetors, an MSD ignition system, a stainless muffler and headers, and a new alternator. The professionally dyno-tuned flat-6 delivers the power via a built 901 side-shift transaxle and RennShift performance shifter. Handling and stopping are via a Bilstein suspension, including a front sway bar, and 911SC brakes. This 914-6 is finished in Porsche Racing Yellow paint and, of course, features the model’s signature removable Targa-style roof panel and surrounding roll bar––and is equipped with Dynamat sound deadening material. The unforgettable mid-engine body is equipped with new wiring, rubber and hardware. Other highlights include a Blaupunkt radio, 911 tachometer, and a center console with temperature and oil pressure gauges and a clock. Metal GT fender flares, fog lights, and Fuchs Porsche Turbo wheels mounting Bridgestone Potenza 225/50R15 tires complete this rare, low-production Porsche GT legend. https://www.mecum.com/lots/1174054/1972-porsche-914-6

The original Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio and sound system now features upgraded speakers behind the factory enclosures, with a hidden Blaupunkt amplifier and Bluetooth unit boosting sound quality and functionality. North Hollywood Speedometer of North Hollywood, California, restored the factory gauges. The 914 rubber dash pad, new pedals and custom green and black coco mats complete the interior appointments, rounding out the concours-grade restoration of this highly sought-after collector Porsche. https://www.mecum.com/lots/1151928/1970-porsche-914-6-targa/

    Porsche 914 2.0 Targa, 1973

Chassis No.: 4732922773 • Exterior: Ravenna Green • Interior: Black • 1970cc Flat 4-cylinder engine • Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection • 5-speed manual transmission • Ravenna Green metallic exterior • Targa top • Black interior • Console • Bucket seats • AM/FM stereo • Heater/defroster • Tachometer • Clock • Alloy wheels with colored Porsche center crest • Continental tires Originally the product of a joint venture between Porsche and Volkswagen, the Porsche 914 was conceived as a dual-purpose model that would serve as both a replacement for the entry-level version of the 911, the 4-cylinder powered 912, and as a Volkswagen “halo car.” The midengine, targa top design looked to be the perfect solution for both marques, but when VW Chairman Heinrich Nordhoff suddenly passed away in 1968, his successor, Kurt Lotz, stipulated changes to the arrangement that would see the 914 marketed as a Porsche in the lucrative North American market and as a VW-Porsche in Europe. Introduced at the 1969 Frankfurt Auto Show, the production 914 in both 4- and 6-cylinder specification incorporated 911 front suspension and steering, a roomy interior featuring a mix of Porsche and VW components, a lift-off Targa top and surprisingly ample storage capacity. Both the 1.7L flat-4 914 and its 2.0L 914-6 counterpart were relatively underpowered at 80 and 110 HP, respectively, but in 1970, Motor Trend Magazine named the 914 its first Import Car of the Year. Porsche ceased production of the 914-6 in 1972 when the market rejected its relatively high price tag, but increased displacement in the 914’s flat-4 to 2.0L and replaced its dual carburetors with Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection, breathing extra performance into the mix. The result was a car that American race driver Richie Ginther described as “the closest thing to a Formula One car for the road.” This 1973 Porsche 914 2.0 5-speed Targa is a splendid example finished in Ravenna Green Metallic paint with a black Targa roof, chrome bumpers and Continental tires on alloy wheels with colored Porsche center crests—desirable features in this classic Porsche. The black, leather-and-fabric interior presents in outstanding condition, offering bucket seats, a console-mounted shifter, tachometer and clock, a heater/defroster and an AM/FM radio. With the rising popularity of classic Porsches of all types, quality examples such as this 914 2.0 Targa are once again demonstrating why the model was Porsche’s runaway best seller during its relatively brief production run. https://www.mecum.com/lots/520485/1973-porsche-914-2-0-targa/
