In 2005, Hot Rod magazine partnered with Factory Five Racing to build one of its highly regarded Shelby Cobra replica kits. Chronicled in two consecutive feature articles, Project Sidewinder was a collaboration between Hot Rod magazine, Factory Five Racing, Muscle Car Restorations Inc. of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, Hot Rod and custom-car designer Murray Pfaff of Royal Oak, Michigan, and Coast High Performance of Torrance, California, to custom build this 1967 Factory Five Shelby Cobra replica. Known as Project Sidewinder, the finished car showcases both the talents of its builders and the outstanding quality of the Factory Five Cobra kit.
Coast High Performance built up the car’s 427 CI Cobra Classic engine, starting with a 351 Windsor small-block bored .030 over and fitting the company’s own proprietary stroker crank, H-beam rods and Probe SRS forged and dished pistons. Probe also supplied a cast-iron main girdle to strengthen the bottom of the production block. In place of the standard Edelbrock Victor Jr. aluminum heads used on the Cobra Classic engine, CHP opted for a set of CNC-ported Air Flow Research heads with 58cc chambers, fed by an 830 CFM 4-barrel carburetor on a polished Victor Jr. aluminum intake manifold.
A hydraulic roller cam controls the valve action, MSD ignition supplies the firepower, and Jet-coated stainless headers and side pipes channel the exhaust. A Tremec TKO II 5-speed manual transmission and Moser 9-inch rear end deliver the 427’s output to the asphalt via low-profile Kumho Victoracer tires mounted on black lightweight 18-inch alloy wheels. The suspension comprises tubular control arms and Bilstein adjustable coilover shock absorbers front and rear, and large-diameter Baer disc brakes with drilled and slotted rotors are featured at all four corners.
Renowned customizer and builder Pfaff designed the bespoke body modifications and paint scheme, distinguishing this FFR Cobra with deep blue metallic paint accented with a white, gray and red motif that sweeps up over the left front fender and down along the side of the hood to the front grille opening. The front-fender engine air vents were enlarged, and brake cooling scoops were blended into the tops of the rear fenders. A carbon fiber hood and carbon fiber door skins contributed to the finished car’s 2,200-pound curb weight. A chromed roll bar and chromed quick jacks complete the Cobra’s custom finish.
In addition to Auto Meter gauges and Simpson safety harnesses, this bespoke Factory Five roadster’s all-black interior features a custom dash plaque inscribed, “Factory Five Racing Custom Built for Hot Rod by Muscle Car Restorations.”
