Still considered to be one of the most noteworthy race car drivers of the 20th century, the late Dan Gurney was known as a gentleman who got things done. That legacy was honored in many ways in his heyday, perhaps most significantly with this unique Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II Dan Gurney Special. Offered only in 1969 as an indirect method to legalize racing equipment for superspeedway circle track action, the example here is one of just 54 known to still exist. Gurney's many racing successes for Ford certainly deserved these accolades, as he had proven himself in stock cars, USAC open wheel, Indy Car, sports car racing and other venues.
This example has been refreshed via a nut-and-bolt restoration, with attention paid to detail. Powered by the nimble 351 CI Ford Windsor V-8 engine, this car came with the Merc-O-Matic 3-speed FMX automatic transmission and a 3.25:1 rear axle as well. There is power steering and power front disc brakes on this car, and the body features the unique, Talladega-style, aerodynamically enhanced front end. Covered in Wimbledon White with the deep blue roof, decklid, hood graphics and side stripes, the car features gold-outlined Dan Gurney Special decals and a rear deck wing.
Inside, the blue vinyl interior is equipped with a 120 MPH speedometer, Philco AM radio, driver’s side remote mirror, premium door panels, wood-grain accenting and deluxe seatbelts. Riding on Firestone Wide Oval white-letter tires, the Cyclone is documented by a broadcast sheet, a car invoice and a dealer letter. Gurney and his All-American Racers made a mark on racing history, and this special and scarce aero Mercury is a direct link to both his and Ford’s racing heritage.
