This 1969 Maserati Ghibli 4.9 Spyder is an intriguingly rare example built for the U.S. market but completed to European specifications. It is made even more exclusive as just the second Ghibli Spyder equipped with the upgraded 4.9L DOHC V-8 rated at 330 HP, a 20 HP increase over the 4.7L engine that preceded it. Perhaps most importantly, it is confirmed by Maserati Classiche that it retains the original matching numbers engine and highly desirable 5-speed gearbox, a combination of which only 37 were produced. Furthermore, it is commonly-believed that fewer than 15 were completed in 4.9L/5-speed configuration to European specifications.
Sold new in the United States and bearing chassis number AM115/S1005 and engine number AM115/1005, it was produced prior to the completion of the homologation process, and does not bear the number “49” in the chassis number that identifies most of the 4.9 liter cars. The absence of this number is explained in an accompanying official letter signed by Fabio Collina of Maserati Classiche, the company’s historical authentication service, which also interestingly confirms that although built for the U.S. market, the car was completed to European specifications.
A second letter from veteran Maserati expert and Maserati Classiche consultant Ermanno Cozza certifies that the car was delivered to Prestige Motors in Beverly Hills, California and presents today in its original combination of code 20Y305 “Giallo” Yellow paint with a Black Connolly leather interior. In 1994 Maserati Owner’s Club member Terrence Teodori purchased the car, which was then in need of restoration. In 2008 he transferred it to the Motorcar Gallery in Fort Lauderdale in Florida, and soon afterward a French enthusiast returned it to Europe for a restoration to stunning condition with the addition of desirable chromed Borrani wire wheels.
Examples of this Italian thoroughbred combining the 4.9L engine and European specification are particularly rare, making this 1969 Spyder Ghibli among the most sought-after of its kind and a timely opportunity to own one of the finest, most beautiful road cars of the period.
