Finished in Midnight Blue with the white stripes and with its odometer showing a mere 71 miles, this 2006 Ford GT is famously powered by a 5.4L/550 HP supercharged V-8 engine with a Ricardo 6-speed manual transmission. The black leather interior features bucket seats with ventilated upholstery, a McIntoch stereo system and a dashboard signed by Carroll Shelby. Fitted with the BBS forged lightweight wheels and black-painted brake calipers, this GT is an impressive example of the breed. The GT harkens back to the 1960s when Ford dominated racing on a variety of circuits around the world. The company’s period campaign of “Total Performance” was more than just marketing lingo.
Ford really was making strides at having an impressive presence in seemingly all forms of racing. Arguably the movement was kicked off by the launch of the GT40 racing program when, as depicted in the movie “Ford v. Ferrari,” Enzo Ferrari badly upset Henry Ford II, who vowed to prove to Ferrari what could have been had they done friendly business together. Fast forwarding to the early New Millenium, Ford was readying to celebrate its 100th anniversary with an all-new retrospectively styled Thunderbird, Mustang and GT.
Working with various design and performance leaders such as Carroll Shelby, Steve Saleen, Camilo Pardo and others, the GT began to take shape largely off the otherwise futuristically appearing GT90 concept car from the 1990s. The GT was available to buyers in 2005 and ceased production in 2006 with just 4,038 produced. For 2016, in celebration of the 50-year anniversary of the GT40’s win at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans, Ford reintroduced the GT with a heavily restyled body, chassis, interior and drivetrain.
