Born with the distinction of being the fastest road-going Ferrari ever made at the time, the 2011 599 GTO had it all: the 6.0L/661 HP engine derived from the 599XX track car, the F1 Superfast gearbox, computerized stability and traction-control systems, Brembo carbon-ceramic disc brakes and at full stride, the most beautiful engine song in all the world. Naturally, a small faction of Ferrari’s clientele is always interested in more, and Ferrari duly answered their desire with the limited-edition 599 SA Aperta, the fastest open-top Ferrari with a top speed of 202 MPH.
The SA Aperta’s announcement coincided with 80th anniversary of Italian coachbuilding artisans Pininfarina, whose close collaboration with Ferrari has produced such revered masterpieces as the short- and long-wheelbase 250 GTs and the 365 GTB/4 Daytona. In fact, the “SA” specifically refers to Pininfarina’s present-day principals: Sergio and Andrea Pininfarina. “Aperta” is Italian for “open” (from the Latin apertura), referring to the car’s signature feature: its removable roof panel.
When in place, the SA Aperta appears at first to be a berlinetta, but a second look reveals the taut fabric roof panel over cleverly designed integrated rollover bars, and the lower windshield profile exclusive to the SA Aperta. Beneath the skin, the car is loaded with 599 GTO goodness, from its spectacular 6.0L/661 HP V-12 and paddle-shifted F1 Superfast 6-speed gearbox to its Manettino-adjusted F1 Trac magnetorheological suspension and enormous Ferrari-Brembo carbon-ceramic disc brakes.
This 2011 Ferrari 599 SA Aperta is one of only 80 built for Maranello’s most privileged clients, and as such, it is a truly bespoke Ferrari with unique paint and a sumptuously appointed interior lined with rich two-tone Saddle leather upholstery. Driver controls are typical for the 16-time F1 Constructors Champion, offering clearly designed analog instrumentation, the famed multi-function steering wheel and large carbon-fiber paddle shifters. One of the rarest and most beautiful Ferraris in the company’s history, this 599 SA Aperta has been driven only 281 miles since new.
