The most refined car of the legendary superspeedway aero-styling programs of 1969-70 was the Dodge Charger Daytona, and for more reasons than one. This beautifully refreshed example is one of the 503 Daytonas produced in mid-1969 to legalize special components for NASCAR competition, but it is also one of just 92 4-speeds listed in the Chrysler Registry and the only example optioned from the factory this way, according to its Chrysler Registry Report. Shipped to Reedman Dodge in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, on August 27, 1969, this car has been given a complete rotisserie restoration.
It is sequential number 390013 and listed in the Winged Warriors/NBOA report. “Most refined” was noted above for good reason—all Dodge Daytonas were reconfigured by subcontractor Creative industries from upscale Charger R/T models, meaning they featured excellent optioning beyond their more visible outside changes. Under the hood here is the Code E86 440/375 HP Magnum V-8 engine, Dodge’s big engine for street duty. Well detailed, complete with a Mopar battery, it is backed by the A833 4-speed manual transmission and A33 Track Pack, which gave the Daytona a D91 Dana 60 3.54 Sure Grip differential, seven-blade fan, heavy duty 26-inch radiator and dual-point distributor.
Aiding the R/Ts already-refined suspension design are both S77 power steering and B51 power brakes. A stunning part of this car is the R6 Red exterior with a white wing and exclusive “DAYTONA” scat stripe, accented with chrome exhaust tips, drip rail and wheel well brightwork, hood pins, and a driver’s outside mirror. Inside, one finds the deluxe black interior with headrest bucket seats, a Hurst shifter with wood-grain ball knob, the C16 center console, J21 in-dash clock, a 150 MPH speedometer and a thumbwheel AM radio.
Of course, all the great Daytona components are a given, including the unique nose cone, special fender-mounted air extractor scoops, reconfigured back light with special decklid, and the towering rear wing. This car rides on a set of Magnum 500 5-spoke road wheels, with redline tires adding a final touch of complementary color. This offering will also include restoration photos, a copy of the Monroney window sticker and the car’s title history. The Daytona program represented a unique moment in automotive production and was prominently featured in period magazines.
Couple its current desirability with the correct OEM details, rare tri-color R6 Red exterior, white wing and black interior color combination, and R/T level accessories, and perhaps that word “refined” truly defines this exceptional opportunity.
