Designed with the California weather in mind, and a Roadster in the proper tradition with no hood and space for just two people, the Aston Martin Zagato DB AR1 – or DB American Roadster 1 - was previewed by a select group of potential customers to gauge reaction. The car was so well received on its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2002, that all 99 of the proposed limited editions were purchased.
Powering the new open supercar was a developed version of Aston's state-of-the-art, 6.0-liter V12 enjoying a boost in maximum power to 435bhp, some 20 horsepower more than the DB7 Vantage. This power increase together with more torque, a revised final drive ratio and 'active' sports exhaust system produce a noticeable improvement in mid-range performance, where it is most useful in everyday driving.
Acceleration can only be described as stunning, 60mph arriving in just 4.9 seconds, while its top speed of 185mph makes the DB AR1 the world's fastest true Roadster. Above all, the DB AR1 was designed to be a true 'driver's car', equally at home on the autobahn or challenging back road. This is a car that beckons you to look for places to go.
Restraining this superlative high performance are equally exalted brakes: Brembo racing-style grooved discs - 335mm at the front, 330mm at the rear - gripped by alloy four-pot calipers assisted by an improved brake booster unit and moderated by Teves ABS. Power is transmitted to the road via a limited-slip differential to special multi-spoke 19" alloy wheels (8"/9.5" F/R) incorporating revised offset to give a wider track, shod with low profile Yokohama tires.
As one would expect of a modern supercar, there was electronic traction control and power-assisted rack and pinion steering, while the well-appointed interior boasted electrically controlled sports seats, six-speaker Becker stereo radio cassette system with 6-CD changer, and alarm/immobilizer with remote central locking and boot release.
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
Built in the last third of production, chassis 073 is unique in that it received paintwork in specially ordered Silver Designo, a Mercedes-Benz color, that unusual tone was carefully contrasted with a subtle dark green interior. According to its CarFax on file the open topped Aston was sold new out of Naples, Florida and would reside in that area being serviced there up until being offered for sale and a change of caretaker in 2012, by which time it had covered 3,397 miles from new.
The car would spend the next 2 years in Indiana, before returning to Florida and being presented for sale at an Amelia Island auction. Clearly an appropriate venue for its sale, the AR1 would pass into local ownership in Fernandina Beach and remain here for most of the next decade.
Over the course of that ensuing decade, just under 1,000 miles have been added to the odometer for a total reading of 4,285 miles at the time of cataloging. Importantly, it has been serviced in June 2021 at a cost of $5,600, which included a service of the fuel system including new fuel pumps/hoses and it also had the starter rebuilt, as well as a new battery fitted. To add to this, more recently in February this year, it received a major service of just under $8,000 completed in February of 2023, with new spark plugs and coil packs, all fluids flushed and changed, new tires, and replacement of the trunk struts, accordingly the seller reports that it is ready to use and driving well.
The recent pre-pandemic anniversary of Zagato, and dedicated concours classes and events showcasing the remarkable and unique designs of this coachbuilding powerhouse were a reminder of the stature of this brand in the story of the automobile. Their partnership with Aston Martin is similarly long lived and the rare examples such as this car from the early 2000s chapter are always likely to be coveted. As such, this car, complete with all of the accessories including umbrellas, seat covers, books, and even the original set of tires from 2003 is in blue chip order.
