Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk. II 16V, 1987

Chassis No.: WVWZZZ19ZHW596811 Registration: D796 HHV Offered without reserve - Rare Type 19 in Monza Blue | Offered Without Reserve - Rare T • Rare Type 19 in desirable Monza Blue • Recent £3,000 expenditure on major service and refresh • Highly original car in excellent condition The second generation of the Volkswagen Golf and the successor to the Mk. I Golf, was launched in Europe at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1983. Sales began in its homeland and most other left hand drive markets soon after and debuted in March 1984 on the right hand drive British market. It was Volkswagen's highest volume seller from 1983 and ended (German) production in late 1992, to be replaced by the Golf Mk. III. The Mk. II was larger than the Mk. I, its wheelbase grew slightly by three inches, as did exterior dimensions. Weight was up accordingly by about 130kg. Exterior design, developed in-house by Volkswagen design director Schäfer, kept the general lines of its Giugiaro-designed predecessor, but was slightly more rounded. The Mk. II was supplied with a wider range of engine options, including a GTD turbodiesel using the 1.6 ‘umwelt’ (ECO) diesel engine, a DOHC 1781cc 16-valve version of the inline-four GTI as well as the tried and tested 1781cc 8v GTI. All told, about 6.3 million second-generation Golfs were built. Our vendor added this lovely 16V Mk. II to his collection last year but with plenty of interesting cars to use and too little time to use them all, he has now decided to let someone else enjoy the car. This is a rare Type 19 variant and is presented in one of the most desirable colours, Monza Blue. The Type 19 is seen as the purest of Mk. II GTI’s and this looks to be a very original example. The paintwork gleams and the interior wears its 39 years particularly well, with very few signs of ageing. The car has benefitted from notable recent expenditure, with approximately £2,000 spent on resolving minor electrical gremlins and carrying out a comprehensive major service, including a new water pump and coolant pipes, fresh spark plugs, filters and fluids throughout. A further £1,000 was spent in 2024, covering a new cambelt, exhaust silencer, two new tyres and an additional service. Other recent maintenance includes replacement front and rear discs and pads (with rear wheel bearings), rear brake calipers and new shocks and springs front and rear. The original ‘Bottle Top’ alloy wheels have been refurbished and the headlining has also been renewed. Supplied to auction with a V5 registration document, owner’s manual and service book showing a comprehensive and continuous service record, MoT test certificate valid until December 2026 and a wealth of invoices and receipts. This is an excellent GTI and is excitingly offered without reserve. Consigned by Fraser Smith https://www.historics.co.uk/auction/lot/?lot=18795&au=105

    Volkswagen Golf GTi 16V, 1991

Chassis No.: WVWZZZ1GZMW743491 Engine No.: KR165249 Registration: J972 PPC The second generation of the Volkswagen Golf was launched in Europe at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1983, with sales beginning in its homeland and most other left hand drive markets soon after. It debuted in March 1984 on the right-hand drive British market. It was Volkswagen's highest volume seller from 1983 and ended production in late 1992, to be replaced by the Golf Mk. III. The Mk. II was larger than the Mk. I; its wheelbase grew slightly by three inches, as did exterior dimensions length 7.1 inches, width 2.2 inches, and height 0.2 inches. Weight was up accordingly by about 260lbs. Exterior design, developed in-house by Volkswagen design director Schäfer, kept the general lines of its Giugiaro-designed predecessor, but was slightly more rounded. The Mk. II was supplied with a wider range of engine options, including a GTD turbo diesel using the 1.6 ‘umwelt’ (ECO) diesel engine, a DOHC 1781cc 16-valve version of the straight-four GTi as well as the tried and tested 1781cc 8v GTi. All told, about 6.3 million second-generation Golfs were built. This lovely example of a Golf GTi 16V was first registered on 2nd September 1991 and presents very well in Tornado Red with Rainbow Grey interior. Interested parties should note, this car was subject to a Category N insurance claim in May 2024 due to light vandal damage, which has now been corrected. The cooling system has recently been overhauled and new braided fuel lines fitted, a stainless-steel exhaust system has also been fitted. Clearly this has been a well looked after example, confirmed by the fact, according to the vendor it drives with no known faults. The engine started immediately when requested and the gearbox operates smoothly and efficiently. Electric windows, a sunroof and power steering are all good features on this three-door Mk. II Golf. Given that the value of similar models has seen a recent rise and considering the delightful condition of this 16 valve GTi it deserves strong consideration by enthusiasts. Supplied with a V5C registration document, a full years MoT test certificate together with a collection of invoices. Volkswagen Golf GTi Mk. II (16-valve), 1987

Chassis No.: WVWZZZ19ZHW623079 Engine No.: KR045772 Registration: D858 NKR • Last owner for over 30 years • Very original time-warp condition • MoT’d every year thus confirming the mileage The Volkswagen Golf GTi is an iconic hatchback that solidified its place in automotive history as a practical performance car. The Mk. II featured a 1.8-litre inline-four engine producing some 137 bhp with its 16-valve engine. While modest by modern standards, its lightweight design, precise five-speed manual transmission, and lively engine made it thrilling to drive. The GTi delivered sharp handling, thanks to a well-tuned suspension, front-wheel drive, and excellent weight distribution. Its compact dimensions made it nimble on twisty roads and a breeze to drive in urban environments. Visually the hallmark design elements of the GTi lineage: bold red accents on the grille, squared-off styling, and alloy wheels. Inside, the plaid-patterned sport seats and ergonomic layout underscored its driver-focused ethos. Practicality was another strong suit. The hatchback design provided ample cargo space, and its robust engineering made it dependable and relatively affordable to maintain. First registered on 19th March 1987, this early Mk. II Volkswagen Golf GTi 16V is presented in Diamond Silver metallic over a striped, grey cloth interior. Specification highlights include 14-inch ‘bottle top’ alloy wheels, a manual sunroof, electric windows, central locking and a leather-bound steering wheel. Under the bonnet resides a free-revving 1.8-litre 16-valve engine producing around 137bhp through a five-speed manual transmission. This time-warp example boasts 65,261 warranted miles and has been cherished by the registered keeper for over thirty years. The accompanying history file shows that the car spent its first five years as a daily driver before retiring to life as a garage queen. Remarkably, the Golf has covered less than 3,000 miles since 1992, with some annual mileage increments being as little as seven miles (driving to and from the MoT test station). Apart from an after-market immobiliser and stainless-steel exhaust, the car appears of original specification including the Volkswagen-inscribed alloys and Blaupunkt radio cassette head unit. Everywhere you look on this Golf, things are clean, fresh and well-kept. Years of indoor storage have paid dividends in preserving the exterior as neither the plastic trim nor the lights show signs of fading to the degree that you would usually expect at this age. The paintwork is in excellent condition and the body panels appear original, flush and straight. The cabin is as good as you could hope for. The headlining was replaced a few years ago, whilst the seats and carpet appear in fine order without any tears. The engine bay, boot and undercarriage are in very good condition. The engine is strong and pulls impeccably and the gearbox operates well with smooth changes on all gears. This delightful Golf GTi benefits from a recent service and cambelt change (July 2023 at 65,189 miles) and is ready to be enjoyed. Supplied with the car are two sets of keys and a comprehensive history file dating back to the point of first registration to include the original owner handbooks and stamped service book. The Golf GTi became a beloved figure among enthusiasts for its blend of performance, style, and practicality. It helped establish the “hot hatch” genre, inspiring generations of sporty compact cars and earning its reputation as one of the greatest everyday performance vehicles of its era.
