    Renault Series 1 R5 Turbo, 1980

Chassis No.: B0000564 Auction: Monterey 2014 Auction date: August 16, 2014 Lot No.: S124 $143,000 | Sold • Exterior: Blue • Interior: Blue • Ultra rare Renault R5 Turbo number 428 of less than 600 produced • One family owned since new from just outside Paris, France • Rare Series 1 R5 Turbo with aluminum body and fiberglass flares • Concept art deco interior design only done in this 1st series • Highly original example with original French Blue paint and interior • 82,000 original Kilometers from new (51,000 miles) • Turbocharged 1397cc mid-mounted motor with 158 HP and 5-speed transmission • Comes with a copy of original French title, full tool set and radio • Could be the best early production original example in existence • CAN NOT BE REGISTERED IN CALIFORNIA Seven years after winning the World Rally Championship in 1973, in 1980 Renault introduced the new R5 Turbo as a pure homologation special to compete in Group 3 and 4 racing and international rally competition. The R5 was based on the production Renault 5 Alpine hatchback, but to meet the demands of its intended mission, Renault engineers scrapped the standard 5’s front-engine, front wheel drive layout in favor of a mid-engine, rear-drive layout that positioned the engine and gearbox longitudinally behind the front seats. The rest of the basic platform remained, but the R5 Turbo’s chassis was strengthened at the rear to cope with the increased loads introduced by the new mid-engine layout. Renault’s initial plan was to build 400 production examples, the minimum needed for homologation purposes. But when the car was introduced at the 1980 Brussels Motor Show, interest in the roadgoing version took Renault by surprise. High demand prompted the company to put the car into limited production at its Alpine factory in Dieppe, France. In three years the factory produced 1,820 R5 Turbos, but fewer than 600 of these were the first series R5 Turbos which today are the most desirable, having never been exported to the U.S. To further exploit the popularity of the R5 Turbo, the automaker introduced a revised, lower-cost version called the R5 Turbo 2 for the 1983 model year. While original Turbo models generally used lighter aluminum components for the roof, doors and hatch, as well as a unique dashboard and instrumentation, the Turbo 2 relied on the Renault 5′s steel body pieces as well as most of its stock interior components. This 1980 Series 1 R5 Turbo from the Craig Brody Collection is number 428 of the limited run of fewer than 600 cars. Finished in brilliant French Blue (much rarer than the only other available color, Bright Red), it features the decidedly hyper-optic French art deco-style interior that helped characterize the early-generation Turbo and complete its overall aggressive demeanor, which is simply stunning in person. Ultra-clean, never raced or modified in any way, it has been owned since new by one French family and was very recently imported from Paris with just 82,000 original kilometers (51,000 miles) on the clock. It was serviced and maintained its entire life, and recently fully inspected by a Renault specialist in St. Gervais la Foret, France. Boasting dynamic and exciting handling unlike almost any other car, it may be the only one like it now available in the U.S. market, comes with a complete tool set and a full service manual and will be offered on a clean Florida title. https://www.mecum.com/lots/191302/1980-renault-series-1-r5-turbo/

    Renault 5 Gordini, 1979

Chassis No.: 12230007666233 Engine No.: 37858 Registration: CYU 89V The Renault 5 Alpine was one of the first hot-hatches, launched in 1976 - going on sale two months before the original Volkswagen Golf GTI. The right-hand drive version was shown at the British Motor Show in 1978 and was officially on sale from 4 April 1979 in the UK and was sold as the Renault 5 Gordini because Chrysler Europe already had the rights to the name "Alpine" in the UK. UK launch price was £4149, nearly a third more than the previous top model the TS at £3187, showing the considerable changes to the car over the 64PS TS which could not reach 100 mph compared to the 93PS Gordini which could reach 110 mph. The 1.4 L OHV engine, mated to a five-speed gearbox, was based on the Renault "Sierra" pushrod engine, but having a crossflow cylinder head with hemispherical combustion chambers and developed 92 hp, twice as much as a standard 1108 cc Renault 5. The larger engine and its various performance parts meant that the spare wheel could no longer fit there and was relocated to the boot/trunk. The Alpine could be identified by special alloy wheels and front fog lights and was equipped with stiffened suspension, but still retaining the torsion bar at the rear with added anti-roll bars. Renault quoted a top speed of 110 mph and tested in the July 1979 issue of UK magazine CAR, it achieved a 0-60 mph in 9.7 seconds. First registered 8th August 1979, this rare Silver Mk I Gordini is likely one of the earliest examples of a Mk I still in existence in the UK. Purchased in 2015 complete and as a good runner it was owned by two brothers who took great pride in their cars and loved this 5 dearly. They maintained the car- which could outperform a turbo car in certain situations- impeccably. The seats are very rare, in the original fabric and in fantastic condition, having spent much of their lives having been protected by special seat covers made to protect them and complement the original interior. As with all old Renault 5s it had some bodywork imperfections, therefore our vendor decided to sympathetically restore it, and spent many hours of the restoration determined to keep this car as original as possible- including a sympathetic respray. The decals have been reproduced from originals, wheels have been refurbished and diamond cut, new tyres fitted and it presents as a time warp example. Having been in storage since the restoration was completed and not driven on the road since, it is therefore stunning; but with this in mind, the car would benefit from a check over before it was driven on the road in anger. Simply put, find another… and then find another in this condition with thousands spent in a sympathetic restoration. A true collectors dream and incredibly rare on these shores. Why waste your time with a Mini, when you could have Gordini? https://www.historics.co.uk/auction/lot/?lot=4563&au=78

    Renault 5 Turbo Type 1, 1981

Chassis No.: B0000204 Engine No.: tbc Registration: tbc In 1980, seven years after winning the World Rally Championship, Renault introduced the new R5 Turbo as a pure homologation special to enable them to compete in Group 3 and 4 racing and international rally competition. The R5 was based on the production Renault 5 Alpine hatchback, but to meet the demands of its intended mission, Renault engineers scrapped the standard 5’s front-engine, front wheel drive layout in favour of a mid-engine, rear-drive layout that positioned the engine and gearbox longitudinally behind the front seats. The rest of the basic platform remained, but the R5 Turbo’s chassis was strengthened at the rear to cope with the increased loads introduced by the new mid-engine layout. Renault’s initial plan was to build 400 production examples, the minimum needed for homologation purposes, but when the car was introduced at the 1980 Brussels Motor Show, interest in the road going version took Renault by surprise. Huge demand prompted the company to put the car into limited production at its Alpine factory in Dieppe in France and in three years, the factory produced 1,820 R5 Turbos, but fewer than 600 of these were the first series R5s which today are the most desirable. To further exploit the popularity of the R5 Turbo, the car maker introduced a revised, lower-cost version called the R5 Turbo 2 for the 1983 model year. While original Turbo models used lighter aluminium components for the roof, doors and hatch, as well as a unique interior trim including seats dashboard and instrumentation, the Turbo 2 relied on the Renault 5′s steel body pieces as well as most of its stock interior components. This Renault 5 Turbo 1was manufactured in 1981 and imported into the UK in 1987. The vendor is a strong Renault enthusiast and has owned this very rare example since 1997. His passion was to attend rallies and shows gathering information and showing this and other Renaults in his collection. In September 2016, work was carried out by John Price Rallying at a cost of £6,153 this included new fuel injectors and pipes, a new fuel metering unit, reconditioned starter motor and alternator and new brake pads. Unfortunately due to poor health, the vendor has used the car very little since. The odometer reading 69,163km (42,195 miles) is thought to be correct although not warranted. Finished in the rare and highly desirable colour combination of metallic blue with contrasting blue and orange interior and badged as number 0008 car on the dashboard, this Renault 5 Turbo presents in excellent order. Supplied with a V5C registration document and a history folder, this rare and iconic classic of the 80’s looks for all the world like a Group B rally car, this may be the perfect chance to own a very rare and desirable Turbo 1. https://www.historics.co.uk/auction/lot/?lot=8212&au=70
