    Ford Escort RS2000, 1975

Chassis No.: BFATPS00370 • Exterior: Sebring Red • Interior: Black • Rare original AVO car • One of the last R2000s to leave the production line in Aveley, England • Registered with the AVO Club in the United Kingdom • Right hand drive • 2.0L inline 4-cylinder engine • Lombard RAC Rally 07 livery • Original Sebring Red exterior • Black interior • Wood trim • Bucket seats • Console clock • Fire extinguisher • Cibie driving lights • Chrome bumpers • Minilite wheels • Roadhog Supreme tires • Full-size spare tire • Includes original wheels, RS center caps, carburetor, intake, and radiator • Extensive receipts and UK MOT results dating back to the early 1980s The moment the British-designed Ford Escort hit the road in 1968, its delightful road manners made it a winner with family motorists and excited sporting motorists who quickly spotted its enormous competition potential. In short, the Escort put Ford on the rallying map and remained a force into the 1980s. Perhaps most epic was Hannu Mikkola’s famous victory in the 1970 London-Mexico World Cup Rally. In no time, Ford produced a detuned 1600cc road-going Mexico model to commemorate the victory. At the other extreme was the complex RS1600 homologation special. That left a gap that was ably filled in 1973 by the RS2000, which was more powerful and more refined than the Mexico. With its 1993cc/100 HP Ford Pinto 4-cylinder engine, it could nudge 110 MPH. On the other hand, the RS2000 was also less temperamental than the tricky RS1600, with which it shared the much-strengthened competition body shell. The RS2000 was more than a happy medium, appreciated equally by sporting road drivers and privateer competitors who campaigned them with considerable success. MkI RS2000s are a relatively rare sight in the U.S., as nearly three quarters of the 5,334 made were produced in Britain for the right-hand drive market. This is such an example, produced at Ford of Britain’s famous Advanced Vehicle Operations plant, which also made the competition cars. As such, it’s not to be confused with the countless versions dressed up as the real thing. Neither has it been stripped bare like so many RS2000s that have been campaigned to death. Instead, it is well-equipped and remains largely original, while a quartet of driving lights and performance wheels hint subtly at its potential. Indeed, as presented, it remains true to Ford’s original brief: a hugely engaging road car that will un-fussily humble flashier machinery and, at the same time, punch well above its weight in competition. https://www.mecum.com/lots/405520/1975-ford-escort-rs2000/

Ford Escort Mk. I Mexico, 1973

Chassis No.: BFATNA00279 Registration: POR 313M • Fastidiously returned to period-correct specification • Fabulous condition • Desirable Daytona Yellow paintwork Ford’s first-generation Escort became hugely successful as a rally car, going on to become one of the most successful rally cars of all time; with it, the Ford works team was practically unbeatable in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Ford’s greatest rally with the Mk. I Escort was perhaps the 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally, where Escorts finished 1st, 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 8th; the winning car driven to victory by Finnish legend Hannu Mikkola. This landmark win led to the Blue Oval producing special edition road cars, christened the Escort Mexico. The Mexico was built at Ford's Advanced Vehicle Operations (AVO) facility located at the Aveley Plant in South Essex. As well as higher performance engines and sports suspension, these models featured strengthened bodyshells, making them an ideal model for rallying. This distinctive Daytona Yellow example was purchased by our vendor last year, having been a lifelong dream for him to own one. The car was previously mechanically and cosmetically modified, however, the previous owner spent a great deal of his fourteen-year ownership removing those modifications in favour of period-correct ones. The car had also been fitted with a cable, rather than hydraulic, clutch and another previous owner had relocated the battery from the bonnet to the boot in an effort to aid weight distribution. All of these were reversed, and today this Mexico presents as it did when it left Aveley for the first time. All four wheels and a spare are period-correct RS four-spokes, the radio was removed, the seat cloths are period correct and our vendor is delighted to inform us that the bolts in the boot are present, signifying that this is a true Mexico. This car also formed the centrepiece of an Escort anniversary feature in Classic Cars magazine, where it was driven by none other than David Richards, who famously won the World Rally Championship as co-driver to Ari Vatanen in an Escort Mk. II. Presented in excellent condition, this example is sure to appeal to any enthusiast, but perhaps most of all to those who appreciate and adore the smallest details, just as our vendor and the car’s previous owner have done. Ford Escort Mk. II RS1800, 1976

Chassis No.: GCATSA04069 Engine No.: SA04069 Registration: ONO 804P World Record Sale! • One of only 109 examples manufactured • Just 24,186 miles from new • Previously owned by Ford as a Press car • One family owned since 1977 • One of only 109 examples manufactured • Just 24,186 miles from new • Previously owned by Ford as a Press car • One family owned since 1977 The Escort RS1800 Mk. II is a legend in the annals of motorsport history, revered for its remarkable performance, innovative engineering, and its unparalleled success in rallying during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Built by Ford, this car was designed to dominate the rallying scene, and it achieved just that, securing its place as one of the most iconic rally cars of all time. The RS1800 Mk. II was introduced in 1975 as a successor to the already successful Escort Mk. I. Its rallying credentials were enhanced by the adoption of the 1.8 litre Cosworth BDA (Belt Drive A-Type) engine, which was capable of producing over 240bhp in competition trim. The BDA engine's twin overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder configuration gave it outstanding performance, enabling the RS1800 to compete with and often outperform much larger and more powerful cars. In terms of chassis and suspension, the Mk. II retained the lightweight and agile characteristics of its predecessor. Its rear-wheel-drive layout, paired with a robust and finely tuned suspension system, made it a favourite among drivers for its responsive handling and balance, particularly on loose gravel surfaces. The car was rugged and reliable, traits essential for the difficult stages of rally competitions. The Escort RS1800 Mk. II's rallying achievements are legendary. It claimed multiple World Rally Championship (WRC) victories, driven by some of the most iconic names in the sport, including Björn Waldegård, Ari Vatanen, and Hannu Mikkola. Notably, Ari Vatanen piloted an RS1800 to victory in the 1981 WRC Drivers' Championship, cementing its status as a motorsport icon. Beyond its rallying success, the Escort RS1800 Mk. II remains a cherished car among enthusiasts and collectors. Its combination of performance, history, and timeless design continues to captivate fans. Restored and modified examples are frequently seen in classic car rallies and events, a testament to its enduring legacy. Originally registered to Ford Motor Company Ltd. on 19th May 1976, this is a very special Escort RS1800. Out of the 109 cars that were built, there were five Press cars, owned by Ford Motor Company, this is one of the five Press cars. On 8th March 1977 it was purchased by the second owner, he used the car for a number of years and in the late 1980’s it was restored by a very knowledgeable chap, Colin Beverley. Colin was also an RS1800 owner having previously owned KIA 9922. During the restoration the engine was dismantled and sent to Holbay for a rebuild. The car sat in a barn for a number of years (around 35) with the rebuilt engine sat on a pallet next to the RS1800. Time had taken its toll and another restoration project was undertaken, with the plan to present the car in the best possible condition. Colin Beverley once again had an involvement with the restoration and completion of the project, not necessarily from a hands-on point of view, more from an advisory and knowledge aspect. The registered keeper sadly passed away and the car is now registered in the name of his widow. We are informed it runs beautifully although needs to be treated gently as it has only done less than 50 miles since the rebuild. The bodywork has been finished to an exceptional standard with good panel gaps and an excellent finish on the Diamond White paintwork. The black cloth interior is also in excellent order. Presenting in a condition that is probably better than when it was new, this 24,186 mile, one family owned, plus FMC is offered for sale for the first time in 48 years. The Escort RS1800 Mk. II is much more than just a car. It is a symbol of an era where skill, engineering, and perseverance converged to create a motorsport legend. Its impact on rallying and its place in automotive history remain unchallenged, ensuring its legacy lives on for generations to come.
