This 1978 Porsche 924/933 race car was built and prepared by legendary Porsche racing champion and Director of Porsche Motorsport North America Al Holbert and his Holbert Racing to demonstrate the viability of the Porsche 924 for participation in the SCCA C Production class category. The Porsche 924 had already proven its prowess in the D Production class, and this particular car was aimed at attracting potential racers to the next higher level category of competition. Al Holbert is legendary in the annals of Porsche Motorsports history with multiple IMSA championships and First Overall victories at Le Mans.
In addition to being a world-class driver, he was the director of Porsche’s North American motorsports division and owned a successful Porsche dealership in Warrington, Pennsylvania. Racing has always been inexorably woven into the DNA fabric of Porsche. Porsche undertook a strong factory support effort for its 924 customers with the 924/933 “kit-car,” offering a complete competition “werks-race car” consisting of a body shell with roll cage, race-prepared engine, transmission, suspension, brakes, wheels and more. Simply stated, it included most everything except the windshield, fuel cell bladder and tires.
One could order either individual pieces a la carte or an entire 9424/933 delivered in containers for the customer to assemble. More than just an amalgamation of parts, these were serious race cars developed by Al Holbert and Doc Bundy in cooperation with Porsche AG. The consummate driver, engineer and race strategist, Al Holbert was instrumental in transforming the entry-level Porsche 924 into a fearsome race car. His facility assembled turn-key Porsche 924/933 race cars for customers and provided technical assistance and spare parts for the racing community. This 1978 Porsche 924/933 Demonstrator Race Car is Chassis No. 10 of only 16 built.
Formerly owned by Dave Finch, the car was purchased by Tom Brennan on June 4, 1986, and presents in Alpine White with No. 1 C Production livery.
