Porsche’s iconic 356 Speedster has enjoyed lasting appeal as one of the most attractive sporting automobiles of its time, especially in its purest, early “Pre-A” design. Conceived by Porsche’s U.S. importer Max Hoffman of New York City, the Speedster established Porsche’s sporting credentials in the American market with amateur racers and enthusiasts alike.
The subject of a no-expense-spared rotisserie restoration completed by renowned vintage auto specialists Classic Showcase of Oceanside, California, this concours-quality 1955 Porsche 356 Pre-A Speedster offers dedicated Porschephiles the best of both worlds, having been converted to its present “Outlaw” presentation that can be easily returned to factory original configuration.
Fitted with dual Weber downdraft carburetors and a Sport exhaust system, its professionally built 1720cc Porsche 912 flat-4 engine headlines the list of carefully chosen mechanical enhancements that includes an upgrade to a 12-volt electrical system, a Porsche 741 transaxle specially built for road rallying and front disc brakes. Classically turned out in Porsche Metallic Grey paint over expertly prepared sheet metal, the car retains its original hood, doors, trunk lid, top bow, instruments and seats.
The red leather interior showcases the Speedster’s purposeful approach to passenger accommodations, incorporating the aforementioned original competition-style bucket seats and instruments, a banjo-style steering wheel, Germany-sourced carpet, cloth top and tonneau boot, removable side windows and color-matching Coco mats. German Rudge knock-off wheels fitted with Vredestein Sprint Classic radial tires complement the car’s Outlaw presentation.
