While the Great Depression negatively impacted America’s fine-car manufacturers, Packard’s reputation for excellence helped it maintain its strong market share. Introduced during January 1933, the Tenth Series models rank among the ultimate Classic Era Packards. Among their many attributes, the Tenth Series featured beautifully sweeping skirted fenders and a graceful V-shaped radiator shell borrowed from the 1932 Twin Six. Inside, the dash was a jewel-like work of art surrounded by rich wooden trim.
Underneath, numerous mechanical upgrades made these beautiful automobiles enjoyable to drive and easier to operate than ever before, with new X-braced frames and three-point engine mountings, driver-adjustable and power-assisted brakes, and engine updates including automatic chokes and dual-coil ignition. As Packard’s upscale 8-cylinder line, the Tenth Series Super Eight was offered along two revised wheelbase lengths, comprising the 135-inch wheelbase Model 1003 in five-passenger sedan form only and 142-inch Model 1004 offered in a wide array of 13 open and closed body styles.
Just 788 Model 1004 cars were built in all, including this dashing seven-passenger sedan from the noted Don Williams Estate Collection. Handsomely finished in Thistle Green with a tan interior, this meticulous $250,000 restoration is powered by Packard’s 385/145 HP side-valve inline 8-cylinder engine with a single Stromberg carburetor, with that engine paired with a 3-speed manual transmission. Other highlights include detailed chrome, twin Trippe Speedlights, front and rear leaf-spring suspension, 4-wheel servo-assisted drum brakes and side-mounted spare tires. A 2013 AACA Senior First Place award winner, this wonderful CCCA Full Classic is ready to enjoy and appreciate.
