Although Mercury was considered more of a luxury brand than its Ford corporate cousin, the manufacturer could not ignore the sales potential from participating in racing activities during the late 1960s. At the same time, muscle cars were the hot ticket on the street. With its 1969 Cyclone Spoiler, Mercury managed to tie racing and street performance together in a package that was named for two of its NASCAR drivers, southerner Cale Yarborough and road-racer Dan Gurney from the west coast.
With aerodynamics playing a huge role on the NASCAR superspeedways, Mercury added the two-tone Spoiler package to its sleek fastback intermediate, the Cyclone, offering it either as a Cale Yarborough Special in the Wood Brothers colors of white and red, or a Dan Gurney Special with Gurney’s Presidential Blue on white. The base package included the 290 HP 351, FMX automatic transmission, a blacked-out grille, a two-tone roof and rear deck with matching hockey-stick side stripes, a hood scoop and lock pins, argent-styled steel wheels with F70x14 raised-white-letter Goodyear tires and a rear deck spoiler.
Options for the spoiler model included everything available for the standard Cyclone, including bucket seats, air conditioning and optional big-block engines. This 1969 Cyclone Spoiler Dan Gurney Special is one of only 54 believed to exist today, according to the Cyclone Spoiler/Talladega Registry. Documentation shows that it was purchased new on May 19, 1969, at Town Lincoln Mercury in Fremont, Ohio, by Arthur Weidner, who sold the Mercury to Mike Wagner in the late 1980s. At the time, it was restored to factory specifications by Mark Moses from Moses Automotive. The Gurney Cyclone is nicely optioned with the 390 big-block and blue Deluxe interior with bucket seats and a console.
It comes with the original paperwork, build sheet, warranty registration plate, owner’s manual with original owner identification and a Marti Report.
