In period literature, the Mercury Cyclones of 1969 were stated as being “strictly for fun, 365 days a year.” With packaging options ranging from the hot new CJ to the NASCAR-homologation special Spoiler II, the car offered here is real muscle and equipped from the factory as an R-code 428 Cobra Jet, but it is based on the standard Cyclone trim line. Of course, the biggest change to the body design had been the sloping fastback styling that was already proving formidable on the superspeedways, and Cyclones were only available in this configuration. A separate CJ model was offered as a budget muscle car, built to compete with the Road Runner and the GTO Judge.
However, most Mercury buyers tended toward more than standard fare, and, as a result, this Cyclone features some premium options. While the 302 was the standard powerplant, buyers wanted power, which meant cubic inches. In this case, it was to the top of the charts with the recently released 428 CI Cobra Jet V-8 engine. A great addition to the Ford/Mercury engine stable, the R-code CJ came with a fresh air scoop and functional air cleaner, 10.6 compression and a big Holley carburetor. In this instance, the C6 automatic transmission was selected to go behind it. This car is done in Dark Aqua Poly paint with a black hood stripe leading into its scoop.
Upscale inside as well meant black vinyl bucket seats, a center console with T-bar shifter, a simulated wood-rimmed steering wheel, an AM/FM stereo and an optional tachometer. There is a 120 MPH speedometer in the simulated wood-grain dashboard and Cyclone floor mats. Outside is the hood scoop with Cobra Jet badges, small 428 side badges, rear fender Cyclone CJ decorative script, the die-cast grille and dual exhaust. Finally, this car rides on chrome-trimmed road wheels and period-appearance Goodyear Wide Tread white-letter tires. With so many other offerings to tempt buyers that year, the 1969 Cyclone was never a common sight.
This car, with its 428 CI engine and beautiful body lines, is a muscle machine that lives up to its reputation.
