Code-named “Project 11,” the McLaren MP4-12C, more commonly known as the “12C,” was conceived as a premium series-production sports car in 2005. A total in-house design and development program, as opposed to the Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLR joint venture then in production, the 12C prototype test “mule” was the product of one full year of computer simulations. Test cars were made available to the press in early 2011 and the 12C was first sold as a 2012 model.
An unqualified tour de force, the 12C features competition power and performance from McLaren’s all-new, proprietary 3.8-liter, twin-turbocharged V-8 engine developing 592 HP initially and later 616 HP, mated to a 7-speed twin-clutch Seamless Shift Gearbox (SSG) with steering-wheel shift paddles. Speaking of performance, 12C credentials include 0-60 MPH acceleration in 3.2 seconds, lowered to 3.0 seconds with more aggressive Pirelli P-Zero Corsa tires fitted. The quarter-mile is covered in just 10.9 seconds at 135 MPH, all the way to a 205-MPH terminal velocity.
Cutting-edge features include a luxuriously trimmed and equipped full competition carbon-fiber “tub” combined with extruded aluminum subframes mounting a racecar-type suspension mounting hydraulically linked active dampers. Driver-selectable power and handling settings include Normal, Sport and Track modes. Massive disc brakes and McLaren’s Airbrake bring it to a halt on command. Benefiting from a recently completed 20,000-mile service including clutch adjustment and all fluids, this 2012 McLaren MP4-12C rides on a $12,000 set of HRE three-piece wheels mounting tires with under 1,000 miles of use at the time of writing.
The potent, twin-turbo 3.8L McLaren V-8 engine is paired with an automatic transmission with manual-shift paddles for a fully engaging drive.
