BMW only produced 524 Z8s in 2002, marking it as a very rare find indeed. This car has traveled only 13,894 miles from new and will be sold with the auxiliary hardtop and hardtop storage rack. Under the hood is the 4.9L/400 HP V-8 engine linked to a 6-speed manual transmission, the same setup used in the period M5 sedans. BMW engineers placed the engine between the firewall and front axle giving the car absolute 50/50 weight distribution, making it one of the best-handling cars ever built. Initially introduced at the Tokyo Auto Show in 1997 as Z07, interest was strong enough for BMW to put the car into production.
The first examples saw showrooms in 1999, and by the time production ceased in 2003, only 5,703 were built, 2,543 sold in the U.S. This one is featured in classic German silver over black and has painted aluminum wheels and a new windshield for crystal-clear vision. Designed by Henrik Fisker under the direction of Chris Bangle, the interior was penned by Scott Lempert. The idea behind Project Z07 and BMW Z8 was to ring in the New Millennium with a remarkably technologically advanced supercar that reflected on the company’s heritage halo sports car, the 1956-59 BMW 507 roadster.
The car shocked enthusiasts and the media, finding 0-60 in 4.2 seconds, lateral skidpad grips at around .92 g’s and 60-0 MPH braking in just about 120 feet. Absolutely incredible figures for the day, statistics that outperformed the majority of the contemporary performance cars. Today, the Z8 has a huge, loyal following of BMW fans, enthusiasts and collectors alike. Well built and fun to drive, the Z8 continues to rise in value and has never seemed to lose any of its original charm.
