The invaluable documentation from the factory confirms that chassis no. LWVH82 was ordered new by Marcel Boussac from Franco-Britannique. Boussac, it may be recalled, was a French textile manufacturer and the owner of one of the biggest racing stables; in 1951, he was the richest man in France, and in 1960 one of the six richest men in the world! It was only natural that he should order the very best, specifying his Rolls-Royce with lavish limousine bodywork by Hooper, with a division behind the driver.
The utmost care was taken over the rear compartment, with a console finished in fine wood veneer and fitted with a radio, clock and minibar, together with space for newspapers on either side, and folding footrests. The aluminium bodywork has traditional black paintwork, and the interior is trimmed in beige Connolly leather. Bought by a Parisian gallery owner in the 1990s, this magnificent Rolls was laid up a few years ago and has just been recommissioned.
It still has the equipment specific to cars supplied in France – Marchal headlamps and a speedometer reading in kph – and comes with the correspondence between Franco-Britannic and Hooper relating to the finish of the car, as well as the production sheet for the chassis. The car is in working order but should be given a general overhaul and some cosmetic attention before going to the races once again. Please note that the car is sold without technical inspection.
