This 1987 Porsche 924S is an exceptional example with only 43,500 original miles and is desirably equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission, factory air conditioning, power windows, alloy wheels and Blaupunkt radio. The 924 series—the result of a design-and-manufacturing collaboration between Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche—saw its production run from 1976-88. Its basic front-engine/rear-wheel-drive transaxle architecture was the first sign of the future direction Porsche would be taking with its 928 and 944 models. Upon its introduction, the 924 was applauded for its neutral front-to-rear weight distribution that provided exceptional balance and handling.
Likewise, the exterior styling featured a large greenhouse rear window combined with a low-slung silhouette that drew praise for its fresh, new look. Powered by a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine sourced from the Audi 100, the performance was less than stellar with a power output of only 97 HP. By mid-1985, Porsche made some radical changes and improvements to the 924 with the introduction of the 924S. The 924S would receive a new engine designed and manufactured by Porsche in-house and featuring a 25-percent displacement increase from 2.0 liters to 2.5 liters. Likewise, the power output would increase drastically from its original 97 HP to 150 HP.
This transformative change to the 924 made it almost as fast as its sister 944. The 924S is an interesting chapter in the 924 saga, as knowledgeable enthusiasts realize that the “S” is a performance bargain with only a few examples remaining due to attrition and its short production span. What makes this 924S such an elusive find is its exceptional condition, low mileage, desirable factory options and iconic color combination of Zermatt Silver with a black interior.
