When Porsche introduced its first production turbocharged 911 to the public at the 1974 Paris Auto Salon, it was to announce the homologation of a new racing Porsche for the FIA’s Group 4 and Group 5 classes targeted at international endurance racing. At the time, no one suspected this new homologation special would become one of the most revered Porsche models in the company’s history, but the first-generation 911 Turbo, known internally as the 930 and produced from 1975 through 1989, has earned the respect and devotion of generations of Porschephiles as the first Porsche supercar.
In that final year of production, Porsche produced 857 of the 911 Turbos to celebrate the model’s hugely successful 15-year run. By then, the Turbo had benefited from Porsche’s longstanding approach to incremental development.
Developed using turbocharging technology adapted directly from the all-conquering 917/30 Can-Am racer, the Turbo’s legendary air-cooled flat-6 engine had undergone an increase in displacement from the original’s 3.0L to 3.3L, with output increasing from 256 HP (DIN) at 5,500 RPM and 243 lb-ft of torque to 300 HP (DIN) and 317 lb-ft of torque, aided along the way by the introduction of intercooling and, in 1989, a new Getrag 5-speed manual gearbox to replace the original, long-serving 4-speed. More than a special high-output engine, the Turbo was a well-rounded performer employing more sophisticated suspension and massive vented and cross-drilled disc brakes derived from the 917.
To the general public, however, its most obvious attributes were its prominent “Whale Tail” rear wing and the extra width rubber filling its bulging fender flares. One of a very limited number of North American cars set for the Canadian market, this 1989 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe’s odometer shows 53,920 kilometers, or about 33,500 miles, and presents in superb condition in its original Guards Red paint over a black Sport bucket-seat interior.
