Many consider Packard’s Super Eight and Twelve models of the mid- to late-1930s to be the finest automobiles produced by the legendary automaker. Styling and engineering steadily evolved during this period, with streamlined “envelope” styling introduced for 1935, and 1937 bringing such advancements as Packard’s first independent front suspension, a modern system that utilized wishbones and coil springs, and hydraulic brakes – both boons to drivability. With light steering, a supple ride, and better road-holding and stopping power, these were and remain exceptional automobiles to drive.
The Super Eight convertible victoria offered here was sold new in New York on 13 January 1937. It is believed to have been acquired by its current owners from Jim Boros of Oak Brook, Illinois, in 1999. The current restoration in classic Packard Cream over red is older but well preserved, with a beautiful correct leather interior and well-fitted fabric top, and the car has many of the available options and accessories, including the rare factory-installed dashboard radio, heater, Trippe driving lights, dual side-mounted spares, and an accessory trunk with a full complement of fitted suitcases.
Under the hood is clean, well presented, and authentically finished, including proper colors and decals. Importantly, the car retains its original firewall-mounted vehicle information and body tags, confirming its identity as an original factory-built convertible victoria and not a later “body swap.”
This would be an ideal Packard for CARavans or, with minor freshening, for local and regional concours and shows. It has wonderful class and style, and is the very peak of Packard excellence from one of the company’s finest years.
