Introduced at the January 1932 New York Automobile Show, the Twin Six propelled Packard into the elite multi-cylinder race of the early 1930s against Cadillac and Marmon. While initially named in honor of Packard’s first 12-cylinder line of the World War I era, the new Packard was renamed simply Packard Twelve by 1933. A technical masterpiece, the Packard Twelve was celebrated from launch for its massive torque and nearly silent operation. Careful development was applied throughout production, which continued through the Seventeenth Series of 1939, resulting in the Twelve’s everlasting reputation for excellence.
Initially displacing 445 CI and developing a factory-rated 160 HP, the Twelve grew to 473 CI by the Twelfth Series of 1935, with aluminum cylinder heads and power increased to 175 HP. Predictably, Packard’s range-topping Twelves featured some of the most elegant and luxurious custom coachbuilt bodies ever devised; however, a select few, like this example, were equipped with sporting open bodies. A dwindling number of custom body builders applied their artistry to the majestic Packard Twelve chassis, including Murray under the “Dietrich, Inc.” label made famous by stylist Raymond Dietrich, including the fabulous Model 1207 Convertible Victoria offered here.
Delivered on November 7, 1934, this CCCA Full Classic is one of 788 V-12 Packards built for the 1935 model year and one of only 20 Twelfth Series Convertible Victorias produced. An older restoration sporting a maroon exterior finish accented by a black folding soft top and maroon leather upholstery, it was formerly part of the renowned Blackhawk Collection. Riding on a commanding 139-inch wheelbase, it is powered by a 473 CI V-12 engine (No. 903635) equipped with a Stromberg downdraft carburetor and paired with a 3-speed manual transmission.
Additional highlights include the woodgrain dash and door sill trim, Swan mascot, semi-floating rear axle, semi-elliptic front and rear leaf springs, rear luggage rack, dual side-mounted spares in metal cases, and vacuum-assisted 4-wheel drum brakes. Riding on a set of painted wire wheels with bright centers and rings mounting BF Goodrich wide Whitewall tires, this CCCA National First Prize Winner (Badge no. 2217) benefits from a recent service and test drive.
