Introduced in 2017 to universal acclaim, the McLaren 720S Luxury Launch Edition was then the latest in a string of road cars that have eclipsed virtually every performance benchmark and challenged every convention, especially impressive accomplishments in the rarefied world of the 21st-century supercar. Like all 400 Luxury Launch Editions, this 1,926-mile Glacier White example is a bespoke automobile built to exacting specifications.
The second car in McLaren’s so-called Super Series and the designated successor to the 650S, the 720S is as wild as anything McLaren has ever built for the road, with sensuously contoured body work capped by a tapered canopy and imaginative detailing inspired by the world’s greatest hunting machine, the Great White Shark. One of the key details of the exterior design is the absence of body-side radiator intakes; the cooling function is performed instead by channels running from the nose through the unique double-skinned dihedral doors to the rear side-mounted radiators. A unique optional extra is the pair of Gorilla Glass panels on the tops of the wide-opening doors.
The 720S’ twin-turbocharged 4.0L DOHC 32-valve V-8 engine’s 720 PS power rating (the number behind the model designation) translates to 710 SAE horsepower at 7,000 RPM and a hefty 568 lb-ft of torque at 5,500 RPM. A 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, and carbon-ceramic disc brakes with polished calipers behind Pirelli P-Zero Corsa tires on satin diamond-cut forged lightweight 5-spoke wheels are obvious attributes. The real magic is hidden inside like a genie in a bottle. When called upon, the car’s Proactive Chassis Control II system kicks in, giving the driver enormous control on any road or track, even beyond the initial three wishes.
For added fun, there is a Variable Drift Mode that manipulates the stability controls to assist the driver in drifting the 720S. On the practical side, there is also a front lift feature to clear the parking ramps that are the enemy of any supercar. Visibility, space and comfort are the hallmarks of the 720S interior, which features carbon-fiber primary components, heated power memory seats, an electrically adjustable steering column and 360-degree parking assist. An $11,430 option, the 720S Luxury package on this 2018 example includes custom brown and black leather on the seats, doors, dash and steering wheel.
The combination contrasts perfectly with the pearlescent Glacier White exterior finish, which is complemented with carbon-fiber visible body structure and exterior upgrade packages.
