In 2017, McLaren Automotive established a new benchmark in the brief history of the hypercar phenomenon with the McLaren 720S coupe, a wondrous creation of advanced engineering that instilled lust in every reviewer fortunate enough to settle in behind its controls. The power-retractable carbon fiber roof raises and lowers in just 11 seconds at up to 30 MPH and, when closed, exposes the “flying buttress” passenger protection units featured on all convertible McLarens. Central to the 720S Spider’s persona is its marvelous M840T 4.0L twin-turbocharged DOHC V-8 engine and 7-speed Graziano dual-clutch automatic gearbox, a combination that translates the 710 HP on tap into 0-60 MPH times of 2.5 seconds and an awe-inspiring 212 MPH terminal velocity.
