As 2003 approached, Ford readied for its 100th anniversary, part of which was opening a new design studio known as “Living Legends.” Under the guidance of J. Mays, Camilo Pardo is known as having brought the original GT40 back to life for the new millennium. Known simply as the Ford GT, the sports car was hugely reminiscent of the race car that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans four consecutive times between 1966 and 1969, with 1966 being a 1-2-3 finish for Ford and the GT40. It was the pinnacle of Ford’s “Total Performance” marketing campaign back in the day, and the new car was a stirring tribute to the original.
Four inches taller than the original, the GT was also wider and longer and featured a host of amenities allowing it easily to compete with the world’s best supercars. With the GT introduced as a concept car in 2002, Ford began building them in the fall of 2004 for the 2005 model year.
The slippery aluminum body was stretched over an aluminum space frame, and the chassis was likely fit for NASA specification and featured a precision-cast aluminum double-wishbone SLA suspension with coilovers, Brembo ventilated disc brakes, sticky Goodyear tires, a supercharged and intercooled 5.4L/550 HP V-8 engine with dry-sump lubrication and multi-port fuel injection, a Ricardo 6-speed manual transmission and more. Interestingly, only four options were available: racing stripes, BBS wheels, red brake calipers and a McIntosh stereo system.
The GT impressed the world with 0-60 MPH sprints in less than 4 seconds, quarter-mile conclusions in just over 11 seconds at just over 130 MPH and a top speed of about 205 MPH. This 2005 GT has all four options, stainless steel dual exhausts, black leather-trimmed seats with carbon fiber structures and a tilt-telescopic steering column. It’s only traveled 2,205 miles since new and is presented in Mark IV Red with the white racing stripes, one of the four options. Production of the new GT ran through 2006 and the project was ended with 1,302 GTs sold in 2005 and 1,919 sold in 2006.
