The beautiful Imperial line of Chryslers would create defining moments in American automobile production, and this 1931 CG roadster is magnificent by any measurement. Built to compete with the more established luxury brands but featuring Chrysler’s increased understanding of technology, this model year is considered the first of the second-generation Imperial releases, and the car presented here retains its original LeBaron body and is one of an estimated 100 produced in 1931. Its restoration was completed by Harry Siemens in 1994, and it won a number of accolades including a first-place award at the 1994 Silverado Concours d'Elegance.
One major Imperial component that year was the new inline 8-cylinder engine, whose 384 CI displacement created enough power to propel this vehicle to speeds in excess of 90 MPH. Chrysler’s engineering developers selected the 4-speed manual transmission, 4-wheel leaf-spring suspension and 4-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Riding on a 145-inch wheelbase, it utilizes a beam front axle and live rear axle. Marketed toward an exclusive clientele, this roadster is painted in a sportsman-like dark red with beige pinstripe and features the long-hood styling that denotes the true classics of this era.
This look includes dual front road lamps, dual side-mount spares equipped with accessory mirrors, and dual Klaxon horns. There are draft deflectors and a rear-mounted trunk, with the upgrade of more modern turn signals. A rebuilt water pump and new brakes has been installed as well. Finally, this CG roadster rides on chrome wire wheels with wide whitewall tires. The Best of Show winner at a Chrysler-oriented Bay Area Fall Classic event and second-place finishes at both the 1996 and 1997 Silverado Concours d'Elegance, its most recent honor came as the Stanford Cup winner at the 2012 Palo Alto Concours d'Elegance.
