W.O. Bentley was nothing if not a perfectionist, even drawing praise from no less a stickler than Ettore Bugatti for making “the fastest lorries in the world.” And while the fortunes of his automobile company have ebbed and flowed, two Bentley traits have remained constant: quality and performance. Bentley cars won the second-annual 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1924, and again in consecutive years from 1927 to 1930—in an era when most cars would never come close to finishing that endurance contest.
W.O. concisely described his approach to building motorcars in his mission statement: “While it would offer great comfort and unquestioned luxury as it went about its daily business, so also it would possess a thinly veiled ability to turn into something special at any moment.” Those traits are faithfully embodied in this 2008 Bentley Azure convertible. The regal Mulliner coachwork, finished in Fountain Blue, trimmed with chromed grille and mirror covers and capped with a contrasting Navy soft top, is traditional without seeming dated.
Open the door to W.O.’s world of “unquestioned luxury,” a place where Cotswald leather hides are stitched together without flaw, burled Oak veneer decorates a flowing dash with chrome-ringed instrumentation and switchgear, the seats offering heat and gentle massage. A wood and leather steering wheel, one-touch power windows, three-zone climate controls are but a few of the many touches that make driving the Azure a pleasure unto itself. The 6.75L twin turbocharged V-8 fulfills the second half of Bentley’s pledge, serving up 450 HP to move the Azure effortlessly to highway cruising speed, with the extra “something special” to take it relentlessly toward its top speed of almost 170 MPH.
As it has always been with Bentley, this is motoring at its grandest.
