    Lamborghini Islero GTS Coupe, 1969

Chassis No.: 6531 • Exterior: Red • Interior: Black • Body: Coupe • 1 of 100 GTS models produced • Comprehensive cosmetic and mechanical restoration by Lamborghini specialist Gary Bobileff • Approximately $150,000 invested in restoration • Less than 75 miles on rebuild • 4.0/340 HP DOHC V-12 engine • 6 Weber carburetors • 4-wheel independent suspension • Coil springs and anti-roll bars • 4-wheel hydraulic disc brakes • Believed to be 37,194 miles, metric odometer read 59,858 kilometers • Rosso Red over Tan leather interior • Woodgrain interior trim • Power windows • Original sales brochure • Owner’s manual • Service records Wearing coachwork styled and built by Marazzi, the Lamborghini Islero GTS is regarded as one of Lamborghini’s best front-engined GTs, combining Lamborghini’s wonderful 4.0L/340 HP DOHC V-12 engine (with six Weber side draft carburetors) with a 5-speed transmission, 4-wheel independent suspension, and 4-wheel disc brakes to produce extraordinary performance in a well-rounded Grand Tourer. This pristine 1969 Lamborghini Islero GTS, chassis number 6531 and engine number 50179, was ordered new by the official Swiss Lamborghini dealer in Zurich, Mr. Karl Foitek. Documentation shows that it was the 54th of 100 Islero GTS models built, putting it almost exactly in the middle of production of these very rare Lamborghinis. Later in 1969 it was sold to another Swiss retail Lamborghini agent, Garage W. Ruf AG. It remained in Switzerland and in 1989 was purchased by prominent American collectors Craig and Bunny Davis, who drove it sparingly for ten years. In 1998 they imported it to the U.S. and brought it to their home to Atherton, California. Soon thereafter they sold it to Paul Forbes of Newport Beach. Forbes owned it only briefly before selling it to Ray Grimm, Jr. of Rancho Santa Fe, California, who commissioned a thorough cosmetic restoration by Lamborghini specialist Gary Bobileff in San Diego at a cost of approximately $100,000. After a brief stay with a Mesa, Arizona collector in 2004, the Islero GTS was purchased by Bobileff, who commenced a painstaking mechanical restoration in 2009; covering the entire engine and drivetrain, suspension, brakes and ancillaries, at a cost of nearly $50,000. Bobileff then exported the jewel-like Islero GTS to a prominent private Tokyo museum collection. Except for service and preventative maintenance, it otherwise remained un-driven while in Japan until its purchase by a La Jolla, California dealer in 2014. Fully restored and carefully maintained, this Islero GTS incorporates stunning Rosso Red paint with a wood-trimmed Tan leather interior and power windows. This rare Lamborghini is offered with the original sales brochure, owner's manual and records for the recent mechanical refurbishment. https://www.mecum.com/lots/244527/1969-lamborghini-islero-gts-coupe/

    Lamborghini Islero 400 GT, 1968

$380,000 | High bid • Odometer: 24,985 miles • Engine: V-12 • Transmission: Manual • Exterior: Metallic Bronze • Interior: Black • Engine no. 1848 • No. 5 of only 125 Isleros produced • Unique characteristics present on only the earliest examples • Exquisitely restored from top to bottom in striking period color • Rare evolution of Lamborghini’s Classic 1960s Grand Tourer Chassis No. 6012 with Engine No. 1848, this 1968 Lamborghini Islero 400 GT is the fifth of 125 Isleros produced from this rare model’s introduction at the 1968 Geneva Auto Show to the end of production in late 1969. The final development of the highly successful Touring-styled 350 GT, the Islero’s introduction was somewhat overshadowed by the more visually sensational four-seat Espada unveiled simultaneously at Geneva. Yet the Islero’s tastefully elegant form, created by Touring’s successor, Lombardy coachbuilder Carrozzeria Marazzi, was highly favored by Ferruccio Lamborghini, who reportedly contributed significant input to its design. Indeed, Ferruccio enjoyed the Islero as his daily driver for a considerable time. Like the 350-400GT series and the Miura, the Islero was powered by the reliable and powerful V-12 designed by Bizzarrini and refined by Giampaolo Dallara. Displacing 4.0 liters, this robust powerplant featured double overhead cams, six twin-choke Weber downdraft carburetors and was rated at 325 HP at 7,000 RPM, producing a wailing exhaust note at speed. The Islero’s underpinnings followed the practice then well established at Lamborghini, incorporating a 5-speed manual transaxle, all-independent wishbone suspension with coil springs and 4-wheel Girling disc brakes. Understated in appearance, the Islero was deceptively quick, giving up only about 2 seconds to the Miura in accelerating to 100 MPH and demonstrating superb balance and stability all the way up to its top speed of almost 160 MPH. Its magnificent road holding and civilized manners reflected the extensive development invested in its predecessors, drawing wide praise by contemporary reviewers. As just the fifth produced, this exceptional 1968 Islero has unique features not seen on later examples after production procedures were finalized. Most notable of these are this car’s chromed Borrani wire wheels, which were first seen upon the model’s Geneva introduction and in sales brochures; later models were fitted with cast magnesium wheels by Campagnolo. It is further distinguished by one-off front fender vents almost identical in appearance to those of the 1967 Chevrolet Corvette. In the early 2010s the car was sent to Italy, where it underwent a painstaking, nut-and-bolt rotisserie restoration over a period of several years to better-than-new condition. Applied over meticulously prepared bodywork, No. 6012’s period-correct Bronze Metallic paint is quite simply stunning. The quality of exterior fit and finish is matched inside by the materials and craftsmanship employed in restoring the cleanly designed interior, which features superb hand-stitched black leather upholstery, tan carpets and a tan leather instrument panel incorporating restored Jager gauges. The engine compartment and undercarriage are likewise exquisitely finished to Concours condition. In sum, this magnificent early-production Lamborghini Islero is an unparalleled example of one of Sant’Agata’s finest early grand-touring automobiles. https://www.mecum.com/lots/554047/1968-lamborghini-islero-400-gt/
