This 1968 roadster, produced right on the cusp, features the all-important Series 1 signatures including covered headlamps, the toggle-switch instrument panel and the triple-carburetor 4.2L/265 HP motor—an engine that would be hobbled by power-sapping twin carbs to meet U.S. emissions standards in later years. This car represents the ultimate development of the E-Type in its purest form, a deserving recipient of the no-expense-spared restoration to which it has been treated. The initial E-Type of 1961 was regarded by Enzo Ferrari as the most beautiful car in the world, but there was still room for improvement. The significant evolutionary enhancements included growing the alloy-headed DOHC inline-6 from 3.8L to 4.2L, a full-synchromesh 4-speed manual transmission, alternator electrics, and fuller, more supportive seats with adjustable backs. This California-delivered car was fully restored in Oceanside, California, by Classic Showcase. The work done included rebuilding the motor, refurbishing the hydraulic, electrical and cooling systems, restoring the instruments, chrome and brightwork, and refinishing the body in Opalescent Maroon. Inside, there’s a tan leather interior and smart, matching tan convertible top. A radio was a factory option, and although the one fitted to the center console has a pleasingly period appearance, it is actually a RetroSound AM/FM Bluetooth stereo. The restoration work is documented in an accompanying MP4 video. Both aesthetically and dynamically, the late Series 1 covered headlamp E-Types occupy a sweet spot for enthusiasts. And just as notable as the svelte and lithe lines is the fact that in its day it offered sensational near-150 MPH performance that matched and even bettered rivals from Aston Martin and Ferrari—cars which cost more than double the money. https://www.mecum.com/lots/1175533/1968-jaguar-e-type-roadster
