In 1958, Mercedes-Benz added diesel power to the lineup in the form of the OM621 diesel inline-4 engine rated at 50 HP at 4,000 RPM. In both gas and diesel configuration, these cars established a reputation for steadfast reliability, serving in numerous roles ranging from family transport to wide use in the taxi industry. In one exceedingly arduous test, Mercedes-Benz factory race driver Karl Kling and TV journalist Rainer Gunzler drove a 190D to a class win in the 1959 African Rally, covering a distance of 8,727 miles. Along with other Mercedes-Benz models of the period, the 190 was among the first of the company’s so-called “Ponton” or Pontoon sedans, so named for the popular new styling development that eschewed the dated carriage-derived design in which the various exterior elements were separated into distinct pieces, instead unifying the body into a single cohesive form. Built on a 104-inch wheelbase, the 190/190D sedan featured solid body-on-frame construction, affording tremendous torsional strength that contributed a smooth ride through all-wheel independent suspension incorporating articulated rear axles and coil springs all around. Exclusive to the shorter 4-cylinder cars were low-wattage parking clearance lights situated at the top rear of each front fender, operated by a simple left-right toggle switch at the lower left end of the dash. Interior accommodations were roomy and quite comfortable, with a padded dash, rubber mats and leather upholstery, all materials typical of Mercedes-Benz’s high quality. Finished in black with a well-preserved red interior, this 1958 Mercedes-Benz 190 sedan is powered by the 1.9L inline-4 engine mated to a column-shifted 4-speed manual transmission. It presents in period-correct gray color scheme with a gray exterior and gray leather seats, complemented by wood-grain interior accents. The ethos of the Mercedes-Benz marque was personified by two models: the 300SL Gullwing and the 190D sedan. Although they represent two polar opposites of the performance and utilization spectrum, these seemingly mutually exclusive models of Mercedes-Benz share the common denominator of engineering excellence and intelligent design. Just as the Mercedes-Benz 300SL seduced the automotive world with its styling, exhilarating performance and racing success, so did the 190D sedan with its legendary reliability, durability and practical yet brilliant engineering. The 190D “made its bones” as a taxi in both native Germany as well as throughout the European continent. Its spacious cabin could comfortably accommodate four passengers, and its cavernous trunk could haul a generous amount of luggage. The taxi drivers were smitten by its suspension dynamics—independent double-wishbone in front and swing axle in the rear—that delivered a smooth ride over even the most demanding of road and off-road surfaces. It was nimble with its 38-foot turning circle and steering effort did not require power assist. The 4-speed manual transmission was fully synchromesh, and gear changes were effectuated with a Teutonic precision. The inline 4-cylinder diesel engine was a workhorse that was economical—40 MPG was the expected average—and the durability of the bottom end was good for more than 500,000 miles. Servicing attention revolved around oil changes on or below 3,000 miles and routine maintenance of the fuel-injection system and glow plugs.
