Volvo’s reputation was founded on the virtues of safety and solidity. In 1961, the sensible Swedes showed they could also do style with the svelte P1800 coupe. And in 1971, they were at it again, demonstrating that practicality need not come at the expense of style with the launch of the 1800ES, a trendsetting 2+2 sports-wagon version of the coupe. The power was provided by the 1986cc Bosch fuel-injected 4-cylinder engine that could propel the 1800ES to 112 MPH, while 4-wheel power-assisted disc brakes brought things to a halt.
The 2+2 seating, a considerable improvement over the coupe, provided decent trunk space, and when folded, created a flat load bay accessed by the frameless glass tailgate: in short, a versatile and sporting compact town and country Carryall that had few rivals. This yellow 1800ES features an automatic transmission, is augmented with fog lamps and rides on Pirelli tires. The black interior features Smiths gauges and vinyl seats with cloth inserts. With a production run of only 8,078 in total, the ES is in select company.
