In 1972 Volvo introduced their final variant of the P1800. Two prototypes were built by Sergio Coggiola and Pietro Frua, but both were considered too futuristic. The design that was chosen was completed by the in-house Volvo designer Jan Wilsgaard. This was seen as a two-door station wagon featuring a frameless, but all glass tailgate. Jan’s design was very fascinating and made by combing a sporty coupe with a wagon.

The engines in the ES models were detuned to 125-hp by reducing the compression ratio with a thicker head gasket. It is reported that even though the engines lost some power, the cars road performance was actually improved. With American emission standards growing stricter by 1974, Volvo did not deem it necessary to spend the extra time and money to redesign the 1800 ES. Subsequently, only 8,077 examples were manufactured during the two-year model run.

This stunningly designed wagon is finished with beige paintwork matched by a beige interior. Powering this car is a Bosch fuel-injected, 1986-cc inline four-cylinder engine that is mated to a fun-to-drive four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. These cars came from the factory with an independent front suspension, rigid rear axle, and front and rear hydraulic disc brakes.
