As one of the winningest racing cars ever produced, Carroll Shelby’s AC Ace-derived 289 and 427 Cobras are quite likely the most replicated today. However, few of those modern recreations can lay claim to having been produced by the original “Snake Charmer,” Carroll Shelby. The product of Shelby’s drive to produce a line of “official continuation” Cobras during the 1990s and 2000s, the CSX4000-series cars utilized an improved original-type chassis with a choice of fiberglass, aluminum or carbon-fiber bodies.
Available as complete cars, “rollers” sans powertrain or as component cars, Shelby’s new CSX4000 Cobras were sold on a Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin (MSO) issued by Shelby, and they are duly listed in the Cobra Registry compiled and published by the Shelby American Automobile Club (SAAC). Numbered CSX4207, this CSX4000 Series Continuation 427 S/C Cobra’s story begins with its sole owner, Scott Johnson, who arranged the car’s order directly with Carroll Shelby at a meeting at the Bel Air Country Club. It is believed that this example is the first aluminum-bodied CSX4000 Series car to be left unpainted.
The classic Cobra striping etched into the body makes it one of only four cars produced in this style. Prior to completion, the car’s aluminum body was displayed suspended from the ceiling at a prominent Shelby Showcase in Scottsdale, Arizona. The odometer reads a scant 97 miles, most of which were accrued in testing. Power is delivered by an FE-Series 427 CI V-8 engine with a Vortech supercharger and an aluminum block and heads. A Toploader wide-ratio 4-speed manual transmission sends the power to a 3.54 high-performance rear end. Other highlights include Signature series gauges, side exhaust, a roll bar, half-shafts, quick jack bumpers and pin-drive knock-off wheels.
History is listed in the Shelby Registry and a set of DVDs details the build of the car. Featured in the August 2007 issue of Muscle Car Power magazine, this real Shelby Cobra’s dash and supercharger cover were both autographed by none other than its creator, Carroll Shelby.
