The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG roadster followed up the Sport Light Super gullwing coupe with a debut at the 2011 Frankfurt International Motor Show as a 2012 model. A mere 2,721 of these future classic Sport Light Supers were produced in 2012, with only 884 built as roadsters. The roadster and the coupe represent the first time Mercedes-Benz high-performance division AMG designed a limited-production supercar in-house. Each AMG V-8 engine is hand-built by a single master engine builder, whose name is stamped onto a plaque affixed to the engine. This first-year SLS AMG roadster has logged just 8,000 miles since it was hewn into existence.
The 6.2-liter dual-overhead camshaft 32-valve V-8 with variable valve timing is rated for 563 horsepower at 6,800 RPM and 479 lb-ft of torque at 4,750 RPM. The engine is backed by a 7-speed automated manual transmission. The engine is positioned behind the front axle line and features a dry-sump oil system for low mounting and resulting improved handling. Double-wishbone front and rear independent suspension with front and rear stabilizer bars works with the optional AMG Ride Control adaptive mode suspension to provide even further refinement of road handling to suit every condition and driver preference.
The Iridium Silver roadster body is accented with red-painted brake calipers and ultralight carbon-fiber trim. The Classic Red and Black Designo leather interior brings executive-class appointments to the supercar performance formula. A Bang and Olufsen 1,000 watt stereo system delivers entertainment. The precision convertible top mechanism deploys in just more than 11 seconds and can be actuated at speeds up to 30 MPH. This modern embodiment and interpretation of the iconic ‘50s Mercedes-Benz roadsters sported an original MSRP of $213,825 and comes with CarFax and AutoCheck verifying the short history for this 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG roadster.
