In August 2018 McLaren launched the GT3 competition version, incorporating all the modifications permitted in that category, which meant that some 90% of the car was different from the street-legal model. Two years later the GT3X appeared, the newcomer being a racer-derived track car aimed at wealthy enthusiasts. "The McLaren 720S GT3X represents the pinnacle of design and development for track performance based on the 720S platform," declared its maker. Like the GT3, each GT3X model started life as a bare carbon chassis to be completed at the racing team's headquarters. The GT3X was, and still is to date, the only car within the McLaren product range to be solely developed and built by the motorsport department.
Prior to launch the GT3X had undergone an intensive testing programme at some of the most demanding circuits. The car runs the GT3 aero package with an optimised cooling package coupled to an enhanced power-train. Power is supplied by a derestricted, race-prepared version of McLaren's familiar M840T 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine featuring upgrades and enhancements to deliver a significant increase in power over the 720S GT3. Maximum output is over 700bhp (709PS) and there is also a 'push-to-pass' system delivering an additional 29.5bhp (30PS). Inside the cabin a revised roll cage and interior packaging enables an optional passenger seat to be installed.
Any doubts that the 720S GT3X would deliver the goods on track were emphatically quashed at the 2021 Goodwood Festival of Speed when it set the fastest time on the famous hill climb.
Top Gear found driving the GT3X an exhilarating experience, even more so than that of the limited-edition GTR models in the McLaren stable: "This feels the more genuine machine... The way it remains so balanced when you charge into corners heavy on the brakes, the way the suspension packs such fluency into so little travel. A Senna GTR may be a similar weight and yet more powerful, but I found this easier to manage, more predictable and more communicative."
The pristine GT3X we offer is one of only 15 made. Current usage logged electronically and maintained by McLaren. No servicing has yet been required as it has covered only 450 kilometres from new.
