As the last in Jaguar’s revolutionary XK sports car series, the XK150 was the most developed expression of the breed and the direct predecessor to the projectile-like E-Type of the 1960s and 1970s. Debuted in 1957 with updated bodywork and myriad detail improvements applied throughout its run, the XK150 was available in either standard or Special Equipment outfitting, and by late 1959, both the 3.4L and 3.8L XK DOHC 6-cylinder engines were available in twin- or triple-carbureted “S” tune. From the start, Jaguar applied the lessons learned in competition to its sporting road cars, which steadily grew in performance and sophistication.
A clear case of racing improving the breed was Jaguar’s application of Dunlop 4-wheel disc brakes, which played a key role in its second Le Mans victory with the C-Type in 1953, to the XK150—the first Jaguar road car so equipped. Until late 1959, Jaguar’s already-legendary XK DOHC inline-6 powered the XK150 in 3.4L form with a stout basic 190 BHP rating, uprated to 250 BHP in triple-carbureted “S” tune, good for 130 MPH or more. A 3.8L unit soon joined it. While the XK150 was designed strictly as a fast, GT-oriented road car, a few committed privateers campaigned it to good effect, including the GT-class win at the 1960 Tulip Rally.
American sports-car ace Walt Hansgen drove a stock XK150—in uprated “S” tune—to a creditable third-place podium in June 1960 at Bridgehampton, New York, giving the XK150 a great send-off prior to the release of the XKE in 1961. This final-year 1961 Jaguar XK150 Drophead Coupe was owned by a Jaguar dealer for the last 20 years and displayed in their showroom. Originally sold in San Francisco, it is a highly desirable California car, offered with only an approximate 24,000 miles.
