As the overall GT-class winner at the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans, precisely 50 years after Ford’s historic victory over Ferrari there, the road-going Ford GT debuted at the January 2015 North American Auto Show in Detroit and made its European debut in late 2017 at the Frankfurt Auto Show with a victorious racing pedigree already in place. Developed in parallel with the Chip Ganassi Racing/Multimatic racing cars, the new Ford GT is essentially a thinly disguised FIA LM GTE-class endurance racer with license plates.
Manufacture of road models is handled by Multimatic at a purpose-built, low-volume facility in Markham, Ontario, where the first Ford GT road car was completed in December 2016 with top Ford brass in attendance. Carrying Serial No. 77, this early production Ford GT is striking in its extra-cost optional Liquid Blue paint finish. Stunning bodywork features built-in aerodynamic features for optimal downforce and engine-cooling, yet clearly pays stylistic homage to its legendary predecessors with a modern twist. At its heart, the GT is built around a carbon fiber monocoque structure with an integrated steel roll cage and aluminum substructure.
Power is delivered by an aluminum block-and-head, 3.5L twin-turbocharged and intercooled DOHC EcoBoost V-6 engine developing 647 HP and 550 lb-ft of torque, harnessed by a paddle-shifted Getrag 7-speed, dual-clutch transmission/rear transaxle. Electrifying performance includes 0-60 MPH acceleration in 3.0 seconds and a factory-rated 216 MPH top end. Supporting race-derived features include hydraulic steering, huge Brembo carbon-ceramic disc brakes with silver calipers, active multimode suspension and super-light wheels.
A stunning array of carbon-fiber is found throughout the car, with the interior featuring Alcantara appointments, a competition-type steering wheel and electronic instrumentation, as well as a digital touch-screen display. Offered with just 640 miles, this 2017 Ford GT is in immaculate, virtually new condition and stands as a true “instant icon” for the ages.
