On the rain-soaked afternoon of June 19, 1966, three GT40 MkII endurance racers crossed the finish line in formation to take the first of four consecutive outright wins in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Because the GT40’s subsequent dominance in 1960s endurance racing made it one of the most coveted competition cars of the 20th century, it served as the inspiration for Ford designer Camille Pardo to create a “new” GT40 to be introduced as part of Ford’s 2003 Centennial Anniversary. Unveiled at the 2002 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the new car attracted immediate worldwide acclaim as a legitimate successor to its namesake, and in 2005 production began on the renamed Ford GT.
While outwardly almost identical to the original, the new Ford GT took full advantage of the intervening four decades of technological advancements while adding all the comforts and conveniences of a true grand touring supercar. Its all-aluminum space frame is wrapped in aluminum body panels and an aluminum-over-carbon fiber engine cover and rides on all-independent, aluminum, double-wishbone suspension with coilover shock absorbers, power assisted rack-and-pinion steering and Brembo 4-piston disc brakes behind Goodyear F1-shod 18-inch front and 19-inch rear aluminum wheels.
It is powered by a supercharged version of Ford’s 5.4L all-aluminum modular V-8 engine using special DOHC heads and driving 550 HP through a 6-speed Ricardo manual transaxle. Offered with an odometer reading of a scant 801 miles, this 2006 Ford GT recreates the classic American racing livery with its Centennial White paint and optional blue painted stripes.
Additionally optioned with gray-painted brake calipers and a McIntosh Audiophile AM/FM/CD stereo with single CD player, three-channel amplifier and 8-inch subwoofer, this 2006 Ford GT features an Ebony interior with Sparco leather sport bucket seats over lightweight carbon fiber structures, a tilt and telescopic steering column, power windows, mirrors and locks, and air conditioning.
