Chassis No. 189294, this 2012 Ferrari 458 Challenge is a full-bore racing machine with impressive credentials that include being campaigned in the Ferrari Challenge Europe circuit in 2013 and 2014 by the highly competitive AF Corse racing team. Designed and engineered specifically for Ferrari’s popular Challenge single-make racing series, the 458 Challenge was presented to the public at the Ferrari Annual Dealer Meeting in Maranello, Italy, on July 14, 2010. Befitting for its mission, the 458 Challenge is lighter than its road-going counterpart through the use of thinner body panels, carbon-fiber replacement panels and Lexan polycarbonate windows and windshield.
Handling is upgraded with aluminum bushings, stiffer springs and a lower ride height to complement the F1-Trac traction-control system, which can be completely switched off; racing-grade Brembo disc brakes are also in the mix. The Challenge is further distinguished from the standard 458 with a full race cockpit fitted with a roll cage, side-window sliding inserts, a racing fuel-filler cap, Pirelli P-Zero tires on 19-inch center-lock wheels, racing exhaust and front and rear tow hooks. The car was also upgraded with the Challenge Series Evoluzione aero package, comprising a carbon-fiber front splitter and adjustable rear wing, both mandated by Ferrari for the 2014 Challenge Series.
The production-tuned 4.5L DOHC engine turns out 570 HP at 9,000 RPM to the car’s F1 dual-clutch gearbox. Chassis No. 189294 finished third overall in the 2014 Challenge Europe season, placing fourth in its final race in the Ferrari Challenge World Final at Abu Dhabi in December 2014. Refreshed by AF Corse before being sent to the United States, it presents in Pearl Giallo and incorporates a Sabelt Titan Carbonio XL racing seat with a Sabelt safety harness. This 2012 Ferrari 458 Challenge has been maintained stateside by specialists Black Horse Motorwerks in Stilwell, Kansas.
