Lotus Elite Series 1 Racer, 1959

Chassis No.: LOT122259 • Exterior: Red • Body: Racer • Serial no. 1222 • Street legal registration in New York • Originally raced in Great Britain • Restored and prepared by Bob Akin Motorsports • Stage V 1216cc inline 4-cylinder engine • Billet crank • Red exterior with black interior • Race-tuned suspension, shocks and spring rates • Eligible for vintage racing competition This 1959 Lotus Elite is a shining example of racing pedigree, having been personally owned, restored and raced by the legendary Bob Akin. Originally raced in Great Britain, the car was imported into the United States in 1985. Two years later it was purchased by Akin, who owned the car for 13 years until he decided to sell it in 2000. During his reign of ownership, Akin performed refurbishment, restoration and race-preparation work on the Elite at a cost of more than $100,000. The car is fitted with a Stage V 1,216cc Coventry-Climax engine built by Marcovicci-Wenz Engineering. The suspension and brakes have been upgraded and fine-tuned for maximum performance. The Lotus Elite was first unveiled at the Earls Court Motor Show in 1957. Until the introduction of the Elite, Lotus and founder Colin Chapman were famous for making racing cars to compete in road racing, hill climbs or club racing. The Elite was the first attempt at a dual-purpose car that could be truly roadworthy, as well as competitive in racing. The Elite would meet both objectives with six consecutive competition-class wins at Le Mans and an enthusiastic motoring public clamoring to purchase the car. The car was certainly advanced for its day. It featured front and rear independent suspension, 4-wheel disc brakes and a very slippery shape with a 0.29 drag coefficient. However, the signature feature of the Elite was its highly innovative fiberglass monocoque construction. Mimicking the construction of a fiberglass boat with an upper and lower section bonded together to create a monolithic load-bearing structure, a steel subframe was attached to support the engine and front suspension. The resulting outcome was a feather-light curb weight of just less than 1,200 pounds. This Elite comes complete with chain-of-custody documentation and period pictures. https://www.mecum.com/lots/306088/1959-lotus-elite-series-1-racer/

In 2022, works undertaken on the car included a new cambelt, tensioner bearings, auxiliary and fan belts, thermostat and hoses, rebuilt carbs, rewired engine bay, new plugs, all oils and filters, new E10 fuel lines and filters, rebuilt brakes with new pads and shoes, a new indicator/full beam stalk and new windscreen wipers. The cream leather interior was fully refurbished at the same time, a black suede Momo Prototipo steering wheel was added, and the Lotus was treated to a pristine set of refurbished GKN Turbine alloys. The indicated mileage is 82,010 which is supported by the sizeable history file. This is a fantastic looking example which is very rare indeed. Lotus Elite Series 1, 1959

Chassis No.: 1129 Engine No.: 7620 Registration: MSU 900 The first Elite or Lotus Type 14 was an ultra-light two-seater coupé, produced from 1958 to 1963 and making its debut at the 1957 London Motor Car Show. It was chassis #1008 and, having spent a year in development, aided by "carefully selected racing customers", it went on sale. The Elite's most distinctive feature was its highly innovative fiberglass monocoque construction; the Elite also used this glass-reinforced plastic material for the entire load-bearing structure of the car though the front of the monocoque incorporated a steel sub-frame supporting the engine and front suspension. The resultant body was both lighter and stiffer and provided better driver protection in the event of a crash. It had independent suspension all round with transverse wishbones at the front and Chapman struts at the rear whilst advanced aerodynamics also made a contribution giving the car a very low drag coefficient. When production ended in 1963, just 1,030 of these had been built. This beautiful example is presented in dark metallic grey with silver roof and has a black interior. This Lotus was imported to the UK in 1989, when the celebrated Motor sport specialist Simon Hadfield looked over the car and rebuilt the suspension and Stuart Rolt performed a rebuild to the engine and gearbox. The car was then subsequently sold in 2004 to a Ferrari specialist in the Cotswolds who then stored it for 20 years and then it was sold to the present vendor. Whilst in his ownership, much work has been carried out on it to bring it up to the fantastic condition you see it in today. This work consisted of new brakes, calipers, wiring refurbished, new factory heater, new hoses, heater valve, the rear suspension was rebuilt once more, new stainless-steel bumpers (front and rear ) were fitted, new front grill and it was resprayed in 2025. A full seals kit was installed at a cost of circa £900 and the dashboard was rebuilt. The total cost of these works was in the region of £10,000. The result is one of the prettiest Lotus models to come from the Colin Chapham factory and oozes appeal like no other!
