    BMW Z8 Roadster, 2003

Chassis No.: WBAEJ13403AH62007 • Odometer: 13,690 miles • Engine: V-8 • Transmission: Manual • Exterior: Black • Interior: Black • Body: Roadster • Highly original example • 1 of 2,543 standard U.S. spec BMW Z8s produced • Odometer reads 13,690 miles • 4.9L V-8 engine • 6-speed manual transmission • Black convertible soft top and removable hardtop • Leather interior • Heated seats • 4-wheel disc brakes • 18-inch BMW wheels • Recent mechanical service completed • Owner’s manual Based on the Z07 concept car unveiled at the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show, the BMW Z8 was designed and positioned to evoke the famed BMW 507 Roadster of 1956 to 1960. The 507, conceived by New York automotive impresario Max Hoffmann and designed by German industrial designer Albrecht von Goertz, drew international acclaim for its beautiful styling, but disappointing performance and high production costs forced BMW to abandon production after 1959. In contrast, the Z8 proved incredibly successful, even as a limited-production model. Imagining how the 507 would have evolved over the 40 years since its production, the BMW design team of Chris Bangle, Henrik Fisk and Scott Lempert produced a stunning retro-modern design that still impresses with its deftly executed references to the 507. BMW’s engineering section took over from there, endowing the Z8 with the contemporary M5’s sensational 4.9L/395 HP V-8, a hand-built, all-aluminum, DOHC piece incorporating 4 valves per cylinder and port fuel injection. The M5’s 6-speed manual transmission, a lower-geared limited slip differential and 500 fewer pounds allow the Z8 to improve on the M5’s performance, producing a 0-60 time of 4.5 seconds and 155 MPH limited top speed. Riding on the Z7-design 18-inch five-spoke wheels mounting Continental rubber, the Z8’s finer suspension tuning gives both exceptional ride comfort and superior handling, with the added benefit of ABS-controlled 4-wheel disc brakes. The highly original, low-mileage 2003 BMW Z8 offered here is one of just 2,543 standard U.S.-spec BMW Z8s produced over the model’s brief three-year production run. The car’s gleaming black paint is matched with a black convertible soft top (or the included black removable hard top) and black leather interior, which includes heated Sport seats, a banjo-style leather-wrapped steering wheel, centrally located instruments and a host of power accessories. Fresh from a recent mechanical service, this BMW Z8 roadster combines style, performance and rarity in what is now considered a modern classic. https://www.mecum.com/lots/1175469/2003-bmw-z8-roadster

    BMW Z8 Roadster, 2001

Chassis No.: WBAEJ134X1AH60892 $225,000 | Sold • Transmission: Manual • Exterior: Red • Interior: Crema • Body: Roadster • 3,800 miles • Designed by Henrik Fisker at the BMW Designworks Studio in California • Exported from New Jersey to France in 2001, returned to the U.S. in 2003 • 4.9L/400 HP DOHC V-8 engine • 6-speed manual transmission • Finished in Red with Crema interior • Factory hardtop • Windbreaker • Independent 4-wheel suspension • 4-wheel ABS disc brakes • Aluminum wheels • Original BMW CPT 8000 TDMA digital phone set?”unused in box • Owner’s manual • Must be sold to an out of state resident or licensed dealer Recreating the magic of an iconic earlier model has never been easy for any automaker; in fact, history has shown that it is rarely successful, but the BMW Z8 introduced in 1999 surpasses even the classic Albrecht Goertz-designed 507 from which it drew its inspiration. Henrik Fisker, then heading up BMW’s Designworks studio in California, received the highest compliment for his work from no less an authority than Goertz himself, who once said, “If I were to design the 507 today, it would look like the Z8.” All the visual elements that made the 507 a timeless classic are there in the Z8: long-nose/short deck proportions, fluidly sculpted contours and such details as the twin-nostril grille and uniquely shaped front-fender vents. The vintage feel repeats inside, where the centrally located instrument cluster—angled slightly toward the driver—and smooth painted dashboard recall many cars of the 507’s time. So too does the steering wheel, whose three four-rod spokes evoke the classic “banjo” design. To maintain the clean retro look, numerous functions were integrated into multi-purpose controls finished in either brushed aluminum or chrome. The Z8’s technology, however, is anything but retro. The structure is a combination of four different aluminum alloys, with a stressed skin over an extruded space frame. The high-mounted tail lights, front turn signals and vent-mounted indicators use neon lights that reach full intensity 10 times quicker than incandescent bulbs. Performance, too, is thoroughly modern. The Z8’s 4.9L/400 HP DOHC V-8 engine is the same unit that powered the contemporary M5 sedan to 60 MPH in 4.5 seconds, a figure the Z8 surpassed in magazine tests. Its advanced all-independent suspension, Bridgestone Potenza tires on 18-inch alloy wheels and 4-wheel ABS disc brakes combine for athletic yet composed handling. Available only with a 6-speed manual transmission, every Z8 was delivered with a matching-color aluminum top with rear window defroster, and as demonstrated by the red over Crema 2001 Z8 offered here, was designed to perfectly complement the car’s beautiful shape. Exported from New Jersey to France in 2001 and returned to the U.S. in 2003, this sparkling Z8 received excellent care in the renowned Orin Smith Collection. It comes with a fitted windbreaker, owner’s manual and the complete original BMW CPT 8000 TDMA digital phone set, still unused in the original box. https://www.mecum.com/lots/CA21-465271/2001-bmw-z8-roadster/

    BMW Z8 Roadster, 2000

Chassis No.: WBAEJ1341YAH60256 $110,000 | High bid • Odometer: 34,603 km • Engine: V-8 • Transmission: Manual • Exterior: Titanium Silver • Interior: Black • Body: Roadster • Styling inspired by the classic BMW 507 Roadster • 1 of 2,543 produced for North America between 2000 and 2003 • Canadian market example, the speedometer and odometer display in kilometers • One-owner • Odometer reads 34,603 kilometers • Titanium Silver with Black Nappa leather interior • 4.9L/400 HP V-8 engine • 6-speed manual transmission • Power-operated convertible top • Heated sport seats • Neon turn signals and tail lights • 18 inch split 5-spoke alloy wheels with Bridgestone Potenza tires The BMW Z8 began life as a styling exercise inspired by the classic BMW 507 Roadster of 1956 to 1960. Conceived by famed New York impresario Max Hoffmann and designed by Count Albrecht von Goertz, the 507 was instantly judged the most beautiful car in the world, but it proved overly costly and was abandoned when its production began threatening BMW’s very existence. However, that’s certainly not the case with the incredibly successful (and profitable) Z8 Roadster, which BMW designers Chris Bangle, Henrik Fisk and Scott Lempert produced by imagining what the 507 would have become after 40 years of styling evolution. One of 2,543 produced for North America from 2000 to 2003, this 2000 BMW Z8 Roadster is a one-owner Canadian market example that demonstrates the Z8’s many strengths. Offered with a Canadian-spec metric odometer reading of just 34,603 kilometers, or 24,479 miles, it is powered by the BMW Motorsport-built S62 4.9L/400 HP V-8 engine with throaty dual exhaust and a 6-speed manual transmission, all sourced directly from the sensational E39 M5 coupe. Penned by Henrik Fisk, the Z8’s lovely contours are complemented with such details as neon turn signals and tail lights, Xenon headlights with washers, and 18-inch split five-spoke alloy wheels fitted with Bridgestone Potenza tires. The coachwork is beautifully enhanced by Titanium Silver paint with a contrasting black Nappa leather interior and a power operated convertible top. Designer Lempert was responsible for the Z8’s classically styled interior, which is highlighted by a leather-wrapped banjo-style steering wheel, heated Sport seats and a centrally mounted instrument panel. Additionally equipped with a six-disc CD changer, power windows and mirrors, cruise control, 4-wheel disc brakes and keyless entry, this 2000 BMW Z8 Roadster is a truly worthy successor to the classic 507 that inspired its creation. https://www.mecum.com/lots/1090925/2000-bmw-z8-roadster/
