Competition vehicle sold without registration At the beginning of the 1980s, Volvo, traditionally known for its robust family cars, decided to enter competition. The aim was to demonstrate its reliability and performance in extreme conditions. The 240 Turbo was modified to meet Group A requirements. Against all the odds, it won the 1985 European Touring Car Championship and the 1985 DTM Championship.
Our example is originally a 1978 Volvo 242 GT that was prepared by Volvo Australia to take part in the Repco Reliability Trial in 1979. This event took place from 5 to 19 August and covered 19,000 km. After the race, the car was partly dismantled and stored in a shed until 1984. Laurie Hazelton then bought it with the aim of modifying it to Group A specifications in order to take part in the Australian championship. He failed to qualify for the Adelaide round in 1986, but took part in the Catsrol – clash for cash at Oran Park in 1987.
In 2004, he sold the car to Richard Prince, who fully restored it before taking part in a number of historic events in Australia. In 2010 and 2011, he called on Robbie Francevic, who carried over the 1986 Australian championship at the wheel of a Volvo 240 Turbo Gr. A, and together they took part in numerous events. In 2015, the car was sold to Craig Neilson, who in turn sold it to Ascott Collection, who imported it to France in 2017.
Today, the car is in good condition, with a 2.1-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine mated to a Getrag 5-speed manual gearbox
A lot of work was carried out in 2020. The engine, turbo, gearbox and wiring harness were overhauled. The clutch and bevel gear were replaced. Finally, the mapping was reviewed and a custom roll bar made by the Jacques Point workshop was installed.
Our Volvo took part in the Dix Milles Tour du Castellet and the Historic Tour (Dijon) in 2020, but has been little used since. It is now eligible for the Heriatge Touring Cup by Peter Auto, the V de V Endurance Races and the AVD Oldtimer Grand Prix. With its singular history, this car has everything to convince the gentleman driver who wants to relive the euphoria of the 1980s.
