A fascinating piece of automotive history, this custom, coachbuilt 1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom II (Chassis No. 41WJ) was, according to Rolls-Royce build records included in its documentation, sold new to Paris, France, art collector Jean Groult and originally crafted as a coupe limousine by French coachbuilders Latourneur et Marchand of Neuilly-sur-Seine. It was later owned by an English gentleman, believed to be a hunter and sportsman who, in the late 1940s, commissioned new Countryman shooting brake coachwork by Harold Radford (Coachbuilders) Limited of London, formerly a retail automobile dealer specializing in the sale of Rolls-Royce and Bentley automobiles.
The rebodied Phantom II merged French and English styling elements in unique fashion, an early indication of the signature style Radford employed as it began specializing in bespoke coachwork for the landed gentry, each car a reflection of its owner’s tastes and desires. The Phantom II was later sold to Iranian business titan M. R. Rafatjah, chairman of industrial conglomerate Gostaresh Sakhteman Company, Ltd. of Tehran and also associated with Shah Reza Pahlavi’s Royal Garage. In late 1978, as the spectre of revolution loomed over Iran, Rafatjah shipped the Phantom II to Great Britain for restoration while he worked at resettling in West Covina, California.
Initially under the care of C&L Restorations of Cheshire, England, the car ended up in the hands of marque specialists David Scott-Moncrieff and Son, Limited, of Leek, England. The Moncrieff firm completed the restoration sometime around late 1987, early 1988, with the total cost combined between the two facilities amounting to approximately £50,000. A dispute developed over the cost of the work but appears to have been settled by the summer of 1988, when the car was finally delivered to Long Beach, California. (It appears that, for various reasons, Mr.
Rafatjah changed his surname to DuPont; correspondence included with the car from the restoration shop and Rolls-Royce are addressed to both gentlemen at the same address in Covina.) It is believed Mr. Rafatjah/DuPont kept the car until his passing in 2023. Chassis No. 41WJ reportedly maintains its original Phantom II chassis and running gear comprising the Rolls-Royce 7.7L OHV inline 6-cylinder engine and 4-speed manual transmission. Its Countryman coachwork remains beautifully finished in burgundy paint with black fenders and accenting, including the black-painted wire wheels.
The artfully flowing coachwork is adorned with the signature Rolls-Royce upright chromed grille topped with the famed Spirit of Ecstasy bonnet mascot, chromed bumpers, Marchal headlamps and dual driving lights, dual cowl lights, two trunk-mounted spares and a moonroof. Its patinated interior presents a quietly elegant ambience that typifies this Classic Era Rolls-Royce. The subject of an intriguing history that spans 96 years and three continents, 41WJ has participated in numerous extended touring events, being driven as recently as late April of this year.
It is accompanied by extensive documentation that includes Rolls-Royce factory records covering the period of Monsieur Groult’s ownership, extensive service records from the car’s first several years, restoration receipts and other correspondence.
