The change from 356 to 911 in 1965 produced sticker shock when prospective buyers noticed a price increase surpassing $2,000. To bridge the price gap until the 911 could find its market, Porsche also produced the 912, which comprised the 911 body and running gear and the 356C’s 1,600cc flat-4 instead of the 911’s 6-cylinder unit. Because it also had fewer amenities, the 912 weighed some 250 pounds less than the 911, and its identical suspension, steering and brakes gave the 912 excellent handling on par with the 911. In addition to Recaro seats, buyers could equip the 912 with air-conditioning, a rear window wiper, halogen fog lights, an electric sunroof and three-point seatbelts.

In its first year of production the 912 outsold the pricier 911 6,440 to 4,865. While the 912 was offered in coupe and targa form, the coupe was vastly more popular; only 2,562 of 34,959 912’s built were targa models. At the end of the 914 production in late 1975, a new version of the 912, dubbed the 912E, was introduced. The “E” stood for “Einspritzung”, German for “fuel injection.” It was powered by a 2-liter, 914-derived engine with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and an air pump. It used the 911 body, but had smaller wheels and tires and non-vented brake rotors. The fuel-efficient engine, rising fuel costs, and lower speed limits made the 912E a reasonable alternative to the 911.

After 2,099 examples were produced, the 924 entered the scene. The 912E was the last air-cooled 4-cylinder vehicle produced by Porsche. It had achieved victory in the racing world, served with European police departments and was featured in the movie ‘Spy Games’ starring Robert Redford and Brad Pitt. Purchased by Mario Sueiras in Pennsylvania in 2008, this White-on-Black 1967 Porsche 912 was a clean and solid performer needing little more than minor repairs, paint and detailing. A matching-numbers example showing just over 46,000 miles, it rolls on Fuchs wheels and retains the original radio. Dry storage has kept it in excellent condition.
