The pinnacle of automotive elegance and engineering, this 1963 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster is a “matching-numbers” example with a fully documented 60-year “four-owner” chain of custody file originating from its initial purchase to the current date. One of just 1,858 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadsters produced from 1957-1963, this specific car is one of the last of the lineage being the 39th from the last car built. The car has undergone an extensive “body-off” restoration performed to an exceedingly high standard by marque specialists HK Engineering in 2006 under the custodianship of its second owner, Ryogi Okamoto of Tokyo, Japan.
Presented in factory-correct DB 050 white exterior, 040 black hardtop, black soft top and appointed in 203 red leather interior, this 300SL Roadster precisely aligns with its Mercedes-Benz build data card. One of only 209 equipped from the factory with the aluminum-alloy engine block, the car also has the low up-sprung weight wheels (aluminum outer rim with a steel center section) with the iconic Mercedes-Benz color keyed hub caps. Although the car was originally ordered in Los Angeles, it does currently feature rectangular “European” headlights—proper fitment for European delivery cars.
It is also fitted with dual Talbot mirrors, fitted matching luggage and a Becker Mexico Automatic Radio with a Hirschman antenna. This car is accompanied by an original owner’s manual, restored “correct” tool kit and a factory crate for the hardtop. During its 60-year life, this 300SL was treated to the “best” in terms of proactive maintenance, repair and ultimate restoration by its four affluent owners who lived in the United States (Los Angeles and Newport Beach), Japan and Kuwait. Since its restoration in 2003, the car has been sparingly driven, fully sorted, fastidiously maintained and stored in a climate controlled garage.
